The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 4, Red Sox 3 (boxscore)

In lieu of the Good and Bad, let’s just get caught up on what was a busy transaction weekend:

  • Bobby Wilson was promoted after the trade of David DeJesus. A day later he was placed on waivers and claimed by the Texas Rangers.
  • Kirby Yates was promoted after the trade of Kevin Jepsen.
  • Mikie Mahtook was promoted after Bobby Wilson was claimed by the Rangers. He was then demoted back to Durham after one game.
  • Grady Sizemore was promoted to take Mikie Mahtook’s spot.
  • Steven Souza got hit on the hand Saturday and broke a bone, landing on the DL.  He is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.
  • Mikie Mahtook was then brought back, racking up some frequent flyer miles. He was eligible for re-promotion (and hence didn’t have to spend the requisite 10 days in the minors) because he was replacing an injured player.
  • Matt Moore will be demoted today. It looks like the Rays will go with a 4-man rotation for now. The Rays play just 8 games in the next 11 days.
  • Richie Shaffer will be called up today to take Matt Moore’s spot. It will be interesting to see if this is just a look-see from the Rays until they need a 5th starter or if Shaffer is here for good. Shaffer could see time at first base against lefties. However, he could also see time in right field. He hasn’t played in the outfield since 2012 Arizona Fall League, but Marc Topkin reports Shaffer has been working out in the outfield and was supposed to see time there in Durham this week.
  • Desmond Jennings has started a rehab assignment with the Durham Bulls.
  • Drew Smyly’s rehab assignment was moved from Durham to Charlotte.
  • Is everybody caught up now? Did I miss anything? As always, you can see an updated organizational depth chart at the link at the top of the page, or here.

THE TELLING: Rene Rivera started for just the second time in the last eight games…The Rays have had 6 different players start in left field the last 6 games: Joey Butler, David DeJesus, Brandon Guyer, John Jaso, Mikie Mahtook, and Grady SizemorePreston Guilmet, who was claimed off of waivers by the Dodgers, has now been claimed off of their waivers by the Brewers…Top prospect Daniel Robertson has started a rehab assignment with the Rays’ Gulf Coast League team. Yes, even minor leaguers can go on rehab assignments. He has been out since early June with a broken bone in his wrist that needed surgery…The Rays are 52-54, 8 games back and in 4th place in the East. The good news is the Rays are just 3.0 games back in the Wild Card, with the Orioles and Blue Jays between the Rays and the Twins.

  • Kevin Cash talks about the decision to demote Matt Moore: “It is performance-related, but more than anything we have the flexibility to go to a four-man rotation … and we’re not going to ask Matt Moore to go to the bullpen. Coming back from injury as he is, we need to make sure he gets consistent innings.” [TampaBay.com]
