Curt Casali

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 5, Tigers 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: THE RAYS SCORED MORE THAN 4! THE RAYS SCORED MORE THAN 4!…Curt Casali became just the 4th Rays catcher to hit 2 home runs in a game, joining John Flaherty, Kelly Shoppach, and Ryan Hannigan. Flaherty and Shopp each did it twice. Casali’s second home run was an unusual one. It hit at least one catwalk, and maybe two, before landing in 162 Landing…The Rays have a plan for Nathan Karns and they are sticking to it. Despite just 71 pitches in 6 innings and only giving up 1 run on 3 hits, Karns was pulled after facing going just 3 batters into the third trip through the lineup. It was the 15th time this season Karns has allowed 2 runs or fewer. Of those, he has not pitched past the 6th inning in 11. But hey, he has a 3.37 ERA, 15th in the AL…Just Evan Longoria doing Evan Longoria things with the glove.

THE BAD: Steven Souza struck out 3 more times. It was the 11th time this season Souza has struck out at least 3 times. Only Kris Bryant (14) has more 3+ strikeout games this season…Jake McGee gave up a run in 1 inning of work ending a streak of 21 straight appearances without allowing a run. He was one scoreless appearance shy of tying JP Howell’s club record.

THE TELLING: Jake Elmore was optioned to triple-A Durham after the game and Asdrubal Cabrera was activated from the DL…Kevin Kiermaier left the game with a “minor abrasion” in one of his eyes. Which eye? The attractive one probably How? He was stretching and an elastic band he was using snapped and hit him in the eye…The 5 runs ended a streak of 13 straight games without scoring more than 4 runs, tied with the Mariners for the longest streak in MLB this season…David Price will take the mound for the Tigers. It will be Price’s second start at Tropicana Field since being traded to the Tigers…The Rays have not allowed a stolen base since July 9, a stretch of 13 games…The Rays are 50-51, 7.5 games behind the Yankees who now have a 7-game lead.

  • According to Jayson Stark, the Pirates called the Rays about James Loney, among other teams with first basemen available, but that Pittsburgh is looking to trade away Pedro Alvarez first. [ESPN]
  • Marc Topkin writes about Jake Odorizzi and Kevin Cash working out their differences over Odorizzi being pulled early in his last start. []
  • Tom Jones argues that the Rays should put everybody on the trade market except Chris Archer and Evan Longoria. []
  • Robbie Knopf argues that the Rays should send Matt Moore to the minors to work out the kinks. [RaysColoredGlasses]
  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscores] Bradin Hagens took the loss despite allowing just 1 run over 5 innings in Durham’s 5-0 loss to Gwinnett. Bulls hitters managed just 2 hits…Montgomery had the day off…Charlotte’s games against Dunedin was rained out…Bowling Green had the night off.

  1. Pat says:

I have to agree on Matt Moore. It's painful for me to watch him right now, so it must be painful for him and all his teammates. Give him a platform to regain form and confidence. Seems his rehab was somewhat stunted, with really only mediocre results, and his transition back to the team was premature. We cannot keep wasting a start with him in the rotation. A half-dozen starts in Durham will clarify the future for both him and the club.

I think Tom Jones peaked when he was covering Student Council elections for his high school newspaper.

KK's eye (left eye) should be fine. Corneas heal very fast. Put in drops and put on an eye patch to prevent him from rubbing his eye. He should feel much better today.
