The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Phillies 5, RAYS 3 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: [The Good is not available today due to a season-long technical difficulty in the Rays’ bats. Hopefully we return to our regularly scheduled program shortly]

THE BAD: The Rays are not a good offensive team. That’s expected. What the Rays can’t afford to do is make pitching and fielding mistakes. The Rays have to be better than the opposition in the field and they weren’t last night. There was James Loney dropping a pop-up in foul territory with 2 outs in the 5th, a ball he normally catches, leading to an RBI single. There was Evan Longoria’s wild throw on the next batter which led to another run. There was Matt Moore’s wild second inning which included a wild pitch and walks to the first two batters of the inning and another walk to the pitcher with 2 outs. That was followed by a 2-run double. In fact, Moore threw 48 strikes and 35 balls and that was generous based on the swings of the Phillies. In reality, it was a lot worse…Pitchers hitting is dumb. I have been arguing that for years. It is especially relevant this year as Rays pitchers are now 0-14 and 0-23 since their last hit, which came 362 days ago (July 23, 2014)…Losing to the Phillies in Philadelphia. Losing to the Phillies in Philly is bad. That is all.

THE TELLING: Steven Souza Jr has been activated from the DL and Grady Sizemore has been optioned to triple-A Durham. This was their first roster move in 8 days, a season-long stretch…Desmond Jennings will face Drew Smyly in a simulated game today in Port Charlotte and Asdrubal Cabrera will start taking grounders on Friday (via…The Rays are now 47-48, 5 games behind the Yankees and also trailing the Orioles and Blue Jays by a game and a half-game, respectively.

  • Stuart Sternberg joins in the chorus, says the Rays won’t make any major changes before the trade deadline. []
  • Preaching to the choir, but John Romano writes about the dichotomy between Rays attendance and actual interest in the team. []
  • Forgot to mention Tim Beckham’s baserunning in yesterday’s GBT, but he did own up to the mistake from Sunday, calling it a “stupid play.” []
  • Evan Longoria is selling his parents’ “vacation oasis” in Arizona for $995,000. [FoxNews]
  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscoresRichie Shaffer hit his 15th triple-A home run in 43 games and his 22nd home run of the season overall. Steven Souza and Evan Longoria have 24 home runs combined. One day after I kinda pointed out how Mikie Mahtook wasn’t hitting well in Durham he went 2-3 with a double and walk. Boog Powell stole 3 bases and now has 5 in 19 triple-A games…Jacob Faria who posted a 1.33 ERA in 10 single-A starts, made his 4th start at double-A and allowed 3 runs in 7 innings with 6 Ks and 3 walks. Dayron Varona was 1-4 and Justin O’Conner went 2-4 with a double…For the 6th time in 7 starts and 8th time in 10 starts Taylor Guerrieri allowed 1 run or fewer, specifically, he tossed 5 shutout innings with 3 Ks and now walks. 1B Mike Marjama hit his 6th home run and Marty Gantt added his 4th..Bowling Green lost 4-3 in 10 innings. C Nick Ciuffo went 3-5 with 2 doubles. Hunter Lockwood hit his 10th home run.

  1. Starmand says:

Call me crazy, but it's not pleasant even watching the Rays "play" on TV. All that electricity lost and LEDs worn beyond repair. Furchtbar.

OTOH, in Pawn Stars the bald guy reaffirmed that if a deal is bad "you'd better walk away".

  2. Starmand says:

And in other news from The Walking Dead, Stuart and Rick have cemented a new friendship. Stay tuned for developments.

  3. Steve says:

How did Sizemore have an option? I'm guessing it was a clause he agreed to in his contract?

And WHY is Shaffer still in the minors?

    • Starmand says:

Sizemore: Agreed to in his contract.

    • Monte says:

I know! I know! Shaffer is still in the minors because he is hitting only .278 at Durham and has no stolen bases. He does have 49 SO's in just 43 games so one would think he should be in Tampa Bay.
