USATSI_8592478_154511044_lowresFormer Rays do-it-all Ben Zobrist is expected to be one of the most sought-after position players over the next two weeks and according to one report he could end up back in the AL East.

With the Oakland A’s in last place and 8.5 games back in the AL West Zobrist, who will be a free agent after the season, is expected to be dealt before the trade deadline.

The Yankees are one of four teams said to be interested in acquiring Zobrist according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

“Despite not having the best of years, Zobrist remains sought-after, including by the Mets, Yankees, Giants, and Nationals. Zobrist, 34, has played three positions this season — 25 games in left field, 25 at second base, and three in right field. Zobrist has played only four career games at third base but could play there if needed.”

The biggest competition for Zobrist may come from the Yankees’ cross-town rival, the New York Mets, who are said to be “prepared to overpay” for Zobrist to help their floundering offense.

Zobrist is hitting just .261 with 5 home runs, but still has a solid .346 OBP and .337 wOBA and of course he can still play multiple positions.

Kidding. I wish and hope all the best for Mr. Zobrist and his family. Wherever that might be.

I'm with you on wanting the best for Ben Zobrist and his family. He is a top notch kinda guy. However, I would not want the Rays to face him often, which would happen were he to land in the AL East.

  2. Geoff Peterson says:

I hope the Mets get him but he'll be free to sign anywhere at season's end anyway. He's also aging so he may not get a huge contract wherever he ends up.
