Chris Archer

The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 6, Angels 1 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Chris Archer has reached the point where there is the great Chris Archer and there is the good Chris Archer and nothing else. Last night we got the great Chris Archer and you could see it early on. He gave up a lead-off single in the first but quickly settled down, needing just 22 pitches to get through the first 2 innings with 4 strikeouts and a double-play and you could see it was going to be a long night for the Angels’ bats. At one stretch in the first 3 innings, Archer struck out 7 of 9 batters. He struck out 15, tying the franchise record. Go on, Big Tree!…Can Logan Forsythe keep this up? He is hitting better than he ever has in his career. His first inning home run last night was his 6th of the season, matching his career high. He is also on pace for career highs in average (.288), OBP (.374), and wOBA (.372). How good are those numbers? They are Zobristian. So I want to say this isn’t going to keep up. But at the same time there are no red flags screaming “he has just been lucky!” In fact, there are signs that this is just Forsythe maturing into a good hitter. For example, he is walking 9.9% of the time, a career high and he is striking out just 14.3% of the time, a career low. He is also showing surprising power, with a .186 ISO (extra bases per at bat). Again, that is a number that is similar to Zobrist and even better than what Zo was doing in 2013 (.127) and 2014 (.123). So I am inclined to be cautiously optimistic that Forsythe is turning into the Zobrist we miss.

THE BAD: Albert Pujols is probably going to catch Mike Schmidt by the time this series is over.

THE TELLING: Matt Moore will make his first rehab start tonight for Charlotte Stone Crabs and is expected to throw 50 pitches…Sounds like Desmond Jennings is still a ways away from returningKirby Yates will start a rehab assignment Thursday…The Rays are now 27-26, 1.0 game behind the Yankees.

  • Joe Maddon on the Stanley Cup Final: “I am becoming a Blackhawks fan, as I should be. I do have some roots back there in Tampa Bay. I know coach (Lightning coach Jon) Cooper really well. He is a really good guy. I have not met coach (Joel) Quenneville yet.” [CBS Chicago]

  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscoresDylan Floro struck out 7 and walked none in 6 innings. He allowed 1 run in Durham’s 2-1 win. Richie Shaffer was 1-3 with a double and Ryan Brett also doubled…Daniel Robertson and Justin O’Conner were both 1-4 in Montgomery’s 4-1 loss…Charlotte was rained out…Bowling Green had the day off.

One of the best things about late-night games on the Left Coast is Sun Sports Rays delivering Late Night with the Rays nightmare fuel.
