Grady Sizemore

Red Sox 5, RAYS 3 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Heck of a debut for Grady Sizemore who may be working on a 4 day audition. With Matt Moore expected to start Thursday’s game, the Rays demoted Matt Andriese after Saturday’s game and called up Sizemore. When Moore is activated, a position player is going to be sent packing. Sizemore went 3-5 and could force the Rays to demote somebody else or land somebody on the DL. If Sizemore does stick around, let’s hope he is superstitious and keeps the high-cuffed pants and striped socks (right)…Asdrubal Cabrera we 8-12 in the series.

THE BAD: It was the first time in his career that Chris Archer allowed 3 home runs…Who knows if it would have made a difference but with the Rays scoring 2 in the 7th and then getting a runner into scoring position in the 8th, Brandon Guyer appeared to have an RBI single with 2 outs when he was robbed of a hit and an RBI on a diving stop by Deven Marrero who was making his big league debut. It felt like that play killed the Rays’ hopes of coming back.

THE TELLING: Kevin Kiermaier was not in the starting lineup Saturday or Sunday, but did pinch hit on Sunday, striking out…The Rays are now 0-30 when trailing after 8 innings…The Rays went with their fauxback retro unis on Saturday…With Matt Andriese being demoted and Grady Sizemore being promoted, Desmond Jennings was moved to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster…The Rays have released Allan Dykstra from triple-A Durham…Tim Beckham was activated from the DL and optioned to triple-A Durham…The Rays are now 42-35, a half-game ahead of the O’s and Yankees. The Jays are 1.0 game back. The O’s and Yankees are also the co-leaders in the Wild Card which means the so-called “weak” AL East would have 3 playoff teams if the season ended today…PECOTA is now giving the Rays a 63.6% chance of making the playoffs.

  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscores] Durham split a double-header with Robert Zarate tossing 5 shutout innings in the 5-0 game 1 win. Boog Powell went 3-5 with 2 walks and a triple in his triple-A debut(s). Richie Shaffer was 2-5 with 2 walks and Mikie Mahtook was 2-6 with a walk…Montgomery lost 9-8 despite scoring 7 runs in the final 2 innings. Joey Rickard was 2-4 with his 2nd home run and 3B Patrick Leonard hit his 4th home run…Taylor Guerrieri allowed just 1 unearned run in 4 innings in Charlotte’s 7-4 win over Clearwater. John Jaso went 1-4. Casey Gillaspie hit a grand slam in his first game since being promoted. Willy Adames was 0-2 with 2 walks…Hunter Wood struck out 6 in 5 shutout innings in Bowling Green’s 10-2 win. DH Hunter Lockwood hit his 4th and 5th home runs.

Big Tree is in full bloom.

At this rate, here is what Chris Archer will look like in October.

01

Mike Napoli got ejected early on Sunday. A lot of people thought it was a quick ejection. But if the ump tells you to get the bat and you say “get it yourself” or worse, you’re getting tossed.

"The Rays are now 42-35, a half-game ahead of the O’s and Yankees." - O's are not a half-game back, they're essentially tied with Rays after winning both games of a doubleheader yesterday.

The radio post-game show was awful - - - they kept questioning Archer and the tone was as if he had just lost 10 starts in a row and had no clue where his 'stuff' had gone.
EVERY pitcher has a bad game now and then or they offense does not support him well enough. Move on and let's beat our next opponent.
And it was not as if we were beaten by 6 or 8 runs in the 2 losses to the Sox.

I've been really impressed by Shaffer's start in Durham. I'm not familiar enough with his defensive skills though to know, but is there any chance he could play 2B or become more like Forsythe/Zobrist in positional flexibility?

Archer must have pitched on short rest
