The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Jays 1, RAYS 0 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Nathan Karns did not allow a hit until the 6th inning and did not allow a run in 6.0 innings, lowering his ERA to 3.28. His ERA over his last 11 starts is even better at 2.49. Karns has now allowed 2 runs or fewer in 11 of 15 starts, tied with Chris Archer for second-most in the AL. Karns now leads all rookies with 77 strikeouts.

THE BAD: The Rays did not even have a baserunner until Lagan Forsythe’s infield single in the 8th inning…The Rays had runners on second and third in the 11th inning with one out. Joey Butler struck out and after an intentional walk, David DeJesus grounded out ending the Rays’ best chance to win the game. The Rays’ chance of winning the game was at 83.5% after the wild pitch. It dropped to 62.7% after the strikeout and 50.0% after the ground out…Brandon Gomes now has 3 losses and 4 home runs allowed this season. There are 20 relievers in the AL with 4+ home runs allowed. The Rays have 3 with Ernesto Frieri, Brad Boxberger, and Gomes…This is a hell of a catch, one of the best you’ll ever see. And yes, there are 2 or 3 adult Jays fans sitting right there. But this should never happen to a team at home.

THE TELLING: Steve Geltz gave up a single, ending his streak of 32 consecutive batters retired, a club record…This was the third 1-0 loss of the season tying the Mets for most in MLB… The Rays are now 41-33 and their lead over the Yankees is down to 1.0 game.

  1. Joe says:

Rays could have won in the 10th if Longoria knew how many outs there were. He went on contact on Cabrera ' s shot back to the pitcher and thought the inning was over after the ball was caught. By the time the ball got thrown away he was at 3rd base. He could've scored if he had just stayed near the bag and tagged up immediately.

Tough game to lose in any event, especially after losing 1 to 0 last Sunday. Easier to take when you still have a game lead in the division though. Hopefully they gain some ground playing the Sox.

    • Greg says:

Can't believe Cork didn't put Longo in the "bad" section. It was a game-changer. I thought he assumed he would be doubled (or tripled) off and just gave up. I didn't get the feeling he forgot how many outs there were. But either way, it cost us the game.

      • Ken says:

At what point does the value of Longo being a controlled "asset" pale in comparison to his value as a potential trade chip? Are we seeing the best he has to offer? No doubt his DWar would be missed, but...he slots in the top ten in only two offensive categories: K's and walks. I've been a Longo fan since day one but have seen Shields, Price, Zo and others go when it was clear that a trade would assure a nice return in future talent. Any thoughts?

  3. DRR says:

The Rays should have won that game and should have been pretty damn upset with themselves for losing it. Yet, all evening the team twitter account was posting pictures of everyone dancing and laughing.

Not what I would hope to see from a team that cares about where things are all heading.
