The GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Kevin Cash or whoever has designed this DH-in-the-NL deserves a ton of credit. Of course, part of it is out of necessity with all of the injuries to the starting pitchers. And the Rays can’t do it if they don’t have a well-rested, deep bullpen, full of arms who can work multiple innings. But to have the ability to pinch-hit for a pitcher whenever you want, especially with a scoring opportunity earlier in the game when other teams would just concede the out, is great. The result this time was 5 relievers combining on a 2-hit shutout…Making just his second start of the season, Curt Casali went 3-3 with his 1st home run. He also had a walk…Steven Souza had a big game in his return to Washington. It was his first game at Nationals Park since making the diving catch to save Jordan Zimmerman’s no-hitter last season. Souza had 3 hits including his 13th home run.  He also got a standing ovation from the Nationals crowd prior to his first at bat and Souza looked a bit moved by the entire scene, stepping out of the box and taking a big breath.

It’s just Evan Longoria doing Evan Longoria things.

THE BAD: none today

THE TELLING: Davis Williams has compiled his annual list of Twitter accounts for players selected by the Rays in this year’s draft (see below). Of course, we still have to wait to see who signs and who doesn’t, but this should get you started if you do the Twitter…Matt Moore is getting closer. After 3 rehab starts at single-A, his next is expected to be Sunday in triple-A…The Rays have already used 26 pitchers, a team record…The Rays are now 37-30, still 1.0 game up in the AL East.

  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscores] The Durham Bulls were rained out…Montgomery lost 6-2 with Ryne Stanek giving up 5 runs (4 earned) in 5 innings. Dayron Varona, who to the Rays from Cuba, went 1-4 in his first game since being promoted to double-A. Patrick Leonard was 3-4 with a double…Charlotte lost 7-6 in 10 innings. Willy Adames was 1-2 with 3 walks and his 6th stolen base. Yoel Araujo hit his 2nd home run and stole his 5th base…Bowling Green lost 5-3 in a rain-shortened game. Riley Unroe was 3-4 with a double and his 10th stolen base.

  1. Mr Smith 1980 says:

I got the ESPN feed of this game...
    several observations:

I think l, although it goes against my traditionalist skew, I like the strike zone overlay that tracks the pitches real time.

The bone head commentators were annoying saying anti-rays stuff throughout, for example, "the Rays are out manned at every position..." and "the Rays don't do a lot of things well but..."

    Are you freaking kidding me?
    Scoreboard!... or even better, Standings!

    • Ken says:

Here, Here Mr. Smith. I had both feeds and flipped back and forth. Also had 620 AM going in another room. National coverage of our Rays has an inexcusably negative bent. Still like the radio fella's the best.
Do you think BA did the Grecian formula treatment to his beard?
Is it time for Longo to get hot? What a boost it would be.
      Go Rays.
