Veteran relief pitcher Ronald Belisario is a non-roster invitee to Rays spring training camp and his chances of making the team just took a big hit when it was announced he has a broken bone in his non-throwing shoulder. But it is when Balisario broke his shoulder that will leave you shaking your head.

He broke the shoulder swimming with his daughter about one month ago.

“I was going up,” Belisario told the media. “The pool is kind of low, and I was going up, and the pool has a little lip on the side. And I hit it with my left shoulder. But I didn’t think it was that bad. Since I started throwing, I feel the pain. I didn’t know it was a fracture.”

Freak injuries happen. But Belisario says he expects to miss 2-3 weeks. In other words, he would be back now if had had the shoulder checked out sooner.

Instead, it wasn’t until he started throwing in camp and took a physical that the injury was discovered.
