Charlie MontoyoThe Rays have finalized their coaching staff with third base coach Tom Foley moving to the dugout to become Kevin Cash’s bench coach.

To fill Foley’s spot, the Rays have hired Durham Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo to be the new third base coach.

In addition, former player Rocco Baldelli, who has been serving as a minor league instructor and assistant in the front office, has been hired to be the Rays’ first base coach. He is replacing George Hendrick, who has accepted a position as a special advisor to baseball operations.

Montoyo does not get the bench coach job that we speculated on earlier but he does bring managerial experience to rookie manager Cash’s staff. In eight years as the manager of the Bulls, his teams won seven division titles and two International League championships.

Foley is the fifth bench coach in team history.

  1. Gus says:

I like every one of those moves. Rocco is a fantastic dude (with his muscle ailment, can he stand for 9 innings for 162 games?) and Montoyo deseves his time in the bigs. Congrats to all of those guys.

Can somebody get the MLB Network guys to shut their yaps about trading Longo (a constant drumbeat in the last 36 hours)? This team is a BETTER team than the 2014 team, and maybe better than the 2013 team by significantly upgrading catching, OF defense and a nasty bullpen. The Rays are one move away -- replacing Escobar at SS -- from being the best AL East team because NOBODY in the AL East can pitch like them. I know the CW is that bullpens are witchcraft and difficult to forecast (and that is probably true as to any signle individual), but the depth in that bullpen is better than Rays have ever had. Starting rotation speaks for itself. And shedding the guys who had really gotten stale (S-Rod, Joyce, Hellickson, Molina, Peralta) will invigorate the franchise.

The cumulative effect of the bullpen upgrades have gone underreported with all the other noise in the system.

  2. Chris Wise says:

Really sorry to lose Charlie to the Rays. But pleased to see him in a Rays uniform. Think he will bring a lot to you guys.

  3. Mark Wolff says:

It is a shame the new manager did not bring in a competent hitting instructor. But congratulations to Charlie Montoyo!!! This is a very well deserved promotion.

still have Shelton, I guess our offense is going to suck again. I know he isn't the one that goes to bat. Oh well, Merry Christmas to all.
