Josh LuekeThe Josh Lueke era in the Rays’ organization now appears to finally be over.

Lueke was one of 21 Rays minor leaguers who were granted free agency. Lueke spent each of the last three seasons splitting time between triple-A Durham and the Rays’ bullpen.

Originally acquired in a trade for John Jaso, his success in the minors never translated to the big leagues and his poor performance was never able to justify the blight he put on the franchise because of his dark past.

The Rays are a team that needs to take chances on reclamation projects. Sometimes those chances will backfire. The Lueke move backfired.

  • The Rays have started the process of interviewing managerial candidates. []
  • Former Rays outfielder Gabe Kapler has been hired by Andrew Friedman to be the Dodgers director of player development.
  • In other 4-A player news, Jerry Sands has elected to become a free agent. Vince Belnome has accepted his demotion to AAA (trading in a big league contract for a minor league contract) and will remain in the organization for now.
  • Joe Maddon took out a couple of ads thanking Rays fans. I know some people like these things, but they happen so often now that it feels more like a semi-well-orchestrated PR move designed to appease the fans and probably written by somebody on the agent’s staff. [Big League Stew]
  • The Yankees still owe Alex Rodriguez up to $73 million for the next 3 years. He will turn 40 next season. [BI Sports]
