The GBT - The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Angels 7, RAYS 5 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: via Justin Russo

THE BAD: Jake Odorizzi. Not the best time for Jake to record the second shortest start of his career and his shortest since joining the Rays. He didn’t record his first out until his 36th pitch and even then he didn’t actually retire the batter as the out came on the bases following a single…Kevin Kiermaier. The rookie is coming back to earth, failing twice with the bases loaded and now has just one extra-base hit since July 9…It only takes one bad stretch. The Rays have now lost 3 of 4 after it looked like the Rays were unbeatable for an entire month. But the deficit was just too big and now things look dire with the Rays traveling to face the best team in baseball, on the road. They do so trailing the Yankees by 3.5 games for 3rd place in the East and Cleveland by 2 games for 5th place in the Wild Card.

THE TELLING: Erik Bedard and Juan Carlos Oviedo have been released by the Rays…Ryan Hanigan has been shut down for another week to make sure he is OK…Wil Myers is expected to play his first rehab game on Saturday…Drew Smyly will make his first start for the Rays tomorrow night…The game included a 19-minute delay when a lightning strike at a local substation knocked out some lights. It was the second delay due to weather at The Trop this season. The Rays should make that picture above the cover of their 2014 yearbook with the title “Power Outage”…The Rays are now 26-13 in Navy jerseys this season (including the faux-backs) and 28-44 in all other jerseys.

In the days leading up to the 7/31 trade deadline every nationally known sportswriter had linked Price to another MLB team's most prized prospect(s). From Rosenthal to Collette to Chastain down to Topkin, all stated in print that the Rays would get two of another team's top ten. Many of those statements were referred to by hyperlink on this blog. Most quoted a "highly regarded" source within each team's front office.
Now that the deadline has passed most are backtracking and Friedman's saying he got the best package he could.
    Somebody's lying through their teeth.

Uh, if every sportswriter was linking Price to different prospects before the trade, wouldn't you know they were "lying" then? That's the nature of rumors -- they usually don't turn out true. And if that's what you're really upset about -- rumors not being true -- then take a time out and go stand in the corner for a bit.

Do you think Friedman was offered a better package than what the Rays received and turned it down?

Do you think the 29 other teams got together and made an agreement not to give the Rays the deal you wanted?

Is there any possibility that maybe it's your expectations that were wrong, that all you looked at was Price+Cy Young=tons of top prospects rather than looking at the market as it existed?

Funny that only the Rays rumors turned out to be bullsh*t. Cubs got two # 1 picks for for two pitcher totaling $11.35 million in 2014 salaries and we got what we got. Not upset at the rumor mongers lying at all. Just pointing out that many called the Cubs trade and all were initially "surprised" by the Price trade.
Collusion amongst MLB owners? Heaven forbid. Certainly none of them knew the Rays were desperate to unload Price due to his salary.

When we face some of these big salary teams (like last weekend), I look at their lineups and just shake my head. David Price even alluded to it the other day when commenting on his new team, "it looks like an All-Star team." Indeed.

Yup. I'm caring less and less about MLB every day because of the ridiculous economics of the game. MiLB has some beautiful ball parks, great players, and won't cost you $100 for a seat and a hot dog. Heck, I'm at the point I'd rather watch the games at the park on Sunday (as I did yesterday).

    About the D. Price trade.

Aren't you glad we still have J. Molina?

Given the health of Hanigan? Yes. Tubby stays pretty healthy and is consistently mediocre. Even his CS% seems to be improving.

The problem is that teams are now overvaluing prospects and the Rays can't afford to trade for established/expensive star players such as Cespedes.

As Billy Beane just said, currently there is better value for present players than future prospects.

    cork,

let me ask you a serious question that some people may think is silly. WHat is your opinion of the chances the rays have at signing James Shields andwould they want to? is it a pipe dream? or is there a possibility if he is willing to shave off a resonable amount per year. Lets say he is only looking for a 3-4 year commitment.

He is going to be really expensive. He is a very good pitcher that never gets hurt. Best thing going is that there are a bunch of really good starting pitchers that will be free agents this winter. But even then, it is not the Rays' way to give a veteran pitcher a long-term deal, even if it is just 3-4 years, especially one that will want $15-20 million per season. Even a little discount will still be too expensive.

It was bad market timing. Friedman knows better than anyone they should've moved Price sooner and gotten more. Oh well, just wait til 2020 when Adames gets up here.
