Playing A Little Pepper

Vince Belnome is now officially on the roster and in the lineup tonight for his big league debut. Jeff Beliveau has been optioned to Durham. Cesar Ramos will leave on paternity Saturday. There is a chance Beliveau won’t even leave team and will be recalled on Saturday. Marc Topkin explains that the 10-minimum stay in the minors does not apply to paternity leave…The Rays now have 6 rookies on the roster and have 3 starting tonight for the first time since 2011…The last time the Rays played in Detroit, Luke Scott was the DH, Roberto Hernandez started, and Kyle Farnsworth pitched the 9th inning…The Rays and Tigers are 2 of 4 teams with 14 wins since June 11 (also, Pitt and Cincy).

Hey Cork just to put the final touches on that Balfours grandma tempest, I was watching High Heat on MLB and Chris Russo, who isnt everybody’s cup of tea– I know I know — but he made a good point.

Grant’s granny being in the lobby meant she was going to the game, correct?. I’m going to go out on a limb here but I dont think shes from the Bronx. So as Russo pointed out, how many MLB games has she watched him play live? In a 162 game season and in last place, letting him close in front of his grandma was a great gesture and the man closed out the game.

The sometimes clownish Russo gave JoeMa props and I do too.Maybe it will be a turning point in Balfour’s second stint as well.

….and up in Durham, NC, our old friend Jeremy Hellickson did NOT get shelled too bad and actually picked up a win. Their opponent, the Gwinnett Braves (?) had runners in scoring position for 5 of the 6 innings he pitched. The good news is we’ll soon have a pitcher called up from the Durham Bulls. The bad news? His name will not be Mike Montgomery.
