Playing A Little Pepper

The David Price sweepstakes just took an interesting turn. Major League Baseball held their Competitive Balance Lottery today, which awards some small market and low revenue clubs with extra draft picks after the first or second round. The Rays did not get any extra picks, but the Cardinals did land the 3rd pick in the first round of supplemental picks. Here is where it gets interesting. These are the only draft picks that can be traded. So all of a sudden, the Cards have another asset they can add to a deal for Price. Or the Cards may feel like it is easier to part with an extra prospect knowing they have the extra draft pick coming up. In fact, Bob Nightengale of USA Today has a “high-ranking executive” source who believes the Cards will indeed get Price now that they have the extra pick.

The Rays don't need picks in a Price trade, they need high end prospects.
