David Price and Ben Zobrist

Major League Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline is Thursday and despite the Rays’ recent surge there are still rumors swirling around the team in general and David Price and Ben Zobrist specifically.

What fans need to remember is that the front office knows that the Rays still only have a 10.9% chance to make the playoffs, also known as an 89.1% chance of missing the playoffs. And while the Rays’ recent play will make it tougher to trade for Price or Zobrist, the Rays are still going to listen to offers and it only takes one team to unload their farm system and make an offer the Rays can’t refuse.

One insider, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, has gone so far as to predict Price will indeed be traded before Thursday to the Dodgers.

Beyond that, there are plenty of other notes and rumors. Here are the latest:

  • The Brewers have “put their foot in the water” on David Price. What is interesting about the Brewers is that the Rays play Milwaukee the next 3 days and the Brewers may have a big impact on whether or not the Rays are willing to move Price. [FoxSports]
  • According to Jon Morosi, the Giants had two scouts at The Trop this weekend and are still interested in acquiring Ben Zobrist. [@jonmorosi]
  • Ken Rosenthal reports that the Giants and Pirates had “high-level scouts” at Friday’s game watching the duel between David Price and Jon Lester, although it is not clear which player the teams are more interested in. [@ken_rosenthal]
  • Ken Rosenthal writes that the availability of Jon Lester could make teams less interested in David Price since Lester will be a lot cheaper. [FoxSports.com]
  • Ken Rosenthal also notes that the Braves, Orioles, Mariners, Cubs, and Nationals also had scouts at the game on Friday. [@ken_rosenthal]
  • Jayson Stark had a column that is no longer available, but was quoted elsewhere, in which an executive of another team said the Rays will trade Price if the offer is big enough. But they may hold off if they think they can get a similar deal this winter. [MLBTR]
  • We can count the Cubs out of the David Price sweepstakes as they would prefer to hold on to their prospects according to Bob Nightengale. [@BNightengale]

The Jason Stark comments about the Rays only making a deal if the deal is bignored seems a little on the captain obvious side to me.

As far as the rest of it I'm going to be seriously disappointed if we trade now. Not that anyone cares or that I matter a whole lot but I'm off the opinion that you either believe in regression or you don't. This is a 90 win team IMHO. I say regression is real and we'll be regressing bad to the mean of the next 60 games or so.

That was my first thought. He could have added 'by 4 pm Thursday'

If the Rays fail to notch a W tonite that would provide perfect cover for AF to pull the trigger.

I would expect Price to not make his Wednesday start for us and Zobrist to be gone to a different team by the deadline. Or more precisely David will not pitch till Thursday, as Grienke and the King are slotted in for those nights. Even the guy the Angels are sending out that night has a lower era than DP!

Shocking that a guy who lives in LA and works for Fox Sports 1 (in LA) thinks David Price is being traded . . . to LA.

Oh wait, now he thinks Milwaukee has a chance.

Nobody knows anything at this point; I think it is more likely the Rays are buyers, especially with Lester going for discount pricing.

Why isn't Papi on the block, by the way? He's all but ackowleged at the All-Star Break that he's now pumped full of steroids for the stretch run, and he could help somebody.

" I think it is more likely the Rays are buyers"

    When have we been buyers?

Our payroll is the highest in team history, we have a 10% shot at a wildcard, 4th in our division, we've bombed on Bell, Oviedo, and we signed a catcher that is made of glass. And you seriously think we're going to add payroll. That's priceless.

When in it, the Rays have in fact typically added a piece at deadline or in August (with generally poor results), including but not limited to:

      Chad Bradford
      Chad Qualls
      Brad Hawpe
      Ryan Roberts
      Jesse Crain
      Wesley Wright

My reference to Lester meant they would get less for Price, which means they more likely play for 2014 and are picking up something this week rather than subtracting.

Should have traded Price 2 years ago for Goldschmidt when the D'Backs had interest and Goldschmidt was under a very team friendly 6 year deal and hadn't broken out yet.

Cards look like the best fit, especially if Zobrist and Price go in a package. I thought the same thing a few weeks ago and don't see anything to change my mind now. I'll be surprised if the Dodgers get Price.
