David Price

Ken Rosenthal is reporting on MLB Network that David Price has been traded to the Tigers.

Jon Heyman is reporting that the deal also involves the Seattle Mariners.

The Rays are getting pitcher Drew Smyly from the Tigers as well as middle infielder Nick Franklin from the Seattle Mariners according to Bob Nightengale.

The Mariners are getting Austin Jackson from the Detroit Tigers according to Heyman.

Rosenthal reports that the Rays are also receiving shortstop prospect Willy Adames from the Tigers. Adames is an 18-year-old prospect in single-A.

Bigger question is Why Drew Smyly? Franklin is a nice major league ready infielder...Smyly has marginal starting stats, but has a resume in the bullpen. I agree that the report on the trade seems to be missing something... and if this is all there is then, compared to the Lester trade we've been had...

If this is all the rays got, it is the worst trade by the rays in the friedman era. We basically clogged up the infield even further. and got a # 3 or #4 starter. compare that to shields trade.

Unless there are a bunch of minor league prospects yet to be named then the Rays made the worst trade in franchise history and Seattle and Detroit made-out like bandits.

The Rays were continually saying it had to be an amazing deal or they'd keep him.... ummmm, that's not even close to a good deal. A winter trade would've had to have brought higher returns.

There better be some prospects. Franklin has already failed as an everyday player and Smyly as a starter. I was expecting Zunino or Walker or something decent from Seattle.

I'm shocked at the Price deal. We gave up a perennial Cy Young for a #4 starter (Smyly), another SeanRod (Nick Franklin, .214 career BA) and one prospect from single A (Willy Adames). Some scout's career is on the line with this one.

    ANDREW FRIEDMAN IS A FARCE.

We traded David Price for a 6-9 pitcher, and a 2nd string 2nd baseman that hit .225 in 2013 an .128 in 2014. Hopefully Will Adams deal is true and will actually be the gem in this trade. If not we complete fucked up on the Price trade.

He signed Bell, Balfour, a catcher made of glass in the offseason. Like I said, pitching made the Rays, not Andrew Friedman. We waited tooooo fucking late to pull the trigger while chasing a miracle.

I was all for trading him, but not waiting until the last minute and completely screwing the pooch. The Tigers made out like bandits.

we could have had Yoenis Cespedes for a year and a half orwe could have have the number one prospect from the A's if we would have dealt him early.

This absolutely blows my mind that we didn't have a better offer.
It smells like the Rays were going to trade him all along and thought that waiting until the end would net them a bigger haul.......but everyone called their stupid bluff and we're left holding the bag.
Congratulations Rays, the entire league just figured you out.

Judging Nick Franklin by his MLB batting average is silly. He's got Zobrist-of-the-future potential. It's still less of a haul than I would have expected, but writing Franklin off as a never-will-be is unfair.

Instead of threading the needle, Friedman stuck a needle in our eyes. This is mostly salary dump ($4M saved on Price this year alone), part panic trade.

So for the many of you on here (and Tom Jones in the Times) insistent on a trade of Price, I hope you are happy. Rebuld the farm? Hah.

I like Nick Franklin -- a neat kid, and I really dislike everything about Escobar's game, so there is at least that. And Smyly is interesting. But they ain't worth David Price. Not in a million years.

Adames is very young (18) but could be the SS prospect we have been looking for. 12 triples this year is an interesting stat but he likely isn't here until 2016 or 2017

You do not trade a hall of famer with a year and a half of control left for an 18 year old in A ball. You just don't. None of us have seen Adames, but I think most of us have watched enough baseball (and sports generally) to know you don't do this (especially after you've just dropped millions on a 16 year old SS and have a former No. 1 overall at AAA).

      F'ing awful.

28-12, closing in on 0.500, back in the race - and we get a 4th starter and utility infielder, and a player for 2017 for Price? Friedman sucks. I just got off the phone with the Rays ticketing department. I tried very hard to be calm as she (the agent) did not make this trade. I donated the balance of my flex passes to charity. I will never, yes never, attend a Rays game again. I'll watch because that's free but will never spend another dime to support them. I will try to explain to my grandson that sometimes trades that look bad turn out to be good. Wish me luck. The Rays, Friedman in particular, have pretty much insured that we will not be a relevant franchise for years to come.

Cobb, Moore, Archer, Odorizzi, Hellickson, Smyly, Colome, Romero, Andriese. Let's take it easy Rays fans. The offseason will provide time to filter out the roster, and acquire some more talent via trades.

What is it with the Rays and Nick Franklin???? At the beginning of this year thats all we heard was Price to the Mariners for Franklin. Supposedly we were hung up on throwing in a pitching prospect or two.....so instead we get Smyly and an 18 year old prospect???? Sounds like Friedmans bluff put us in the short stacks. Now we have too many infielders and too many outfielders with no easy way of trading them. Unless they are convinced that some of these guys will pass through waivers; we are in for a fire sale come December. Bravo Tigers, congrats on such a steal! I would commend the Mariners...but they didn't even want Franklin and we were foaming at the mouth for months. It was too easy.

Not sure what makes me feel worse: the errors or the strikeouts?
I would like someone who likes the trade or thinks Adames is worth anything today to find anything in his profile which warrants a trade for a major leaguer, not to mention the best pitcher in the AL.

This does seem like an odd trade considering what the Rays usually do. You might say that the Shields for Myers trade didn't really work for us at this point straight up, but at least you've got a ton of "also included" guys who might end up being the real wins in the end. This one has none of that.

For the Cork Assignment Desk: Please look at moves since Hunsicker left. He always seemed like the pro in the room -- since he departed, the front office has pulled off some really bad and puzzling moves.

Just like an NFL draft pick -- you never know how they'll turn out, but you know within the logic of the draft if you got value on the pick at the time it was made, it just seems like we didn't get the value. Maybe Nick Franklin in the new Zobrist, but if they were smart and just left Zobrist at SS, we'd have the best offensive SS in the AL and couldn have filled another need.

The signing of Escobar this spring to the 2-year deal is going to rank up there with Pat Burrell as the worst of this regime. He is flat out awful, and his awful error may have cost them keeping Price (if they win yesterday, do they keep Price?

  36. Jim says:

Dear Dave, Mr. Smith, Gus and many others on this site.

    Let’s recap
    1. I said we should have started shopping Price early due to our horrific start and the fact that we would be one of the first to market. Yet you guys mocked me and said over and over, “what is to gain? Why not wait till the deadline?” Saying I didn’t know anything about baseball.

    2. I said that Balfour was a complete wasted signing well before we demoted him and that his days as closer were over and we should immediately eat the rest of his salary for the year and dump him for whatever we could get, just so he’s not on the roster for next year. Once again, mocked.

    3. I said that the miracle season would haunt this team for years, and that this year was completely different, because no matter how good we played, we needed a crapload of help and that any of our trades should surely not be influence by the possibility of another miracle.

    4. I said that Andrew Friedman completely dropped the ball by signing/trading Balfour, Bell, Oviedo, Logan Forsythe, and the glass catcher Hanigan. Once again mocked.

    5. I said that by waiting to move Price and Zo, our return would be diminished due to a crowded market and the fact that teams saw our early offers as extremely high and basically chose to see what would be later available and sign slightly lesser players for much less than we wanted.

    6. Even late we turned down offers hoping that teams would cave at the last minute and give up the farm for Price, which obviously backfired in our face. AF panicked at the last minute and took a shitty deal for a marginal 2nd baseman, a marginal pitcher, and a single A infielder for the hottest pitcher in the AL with 1 1/3 year left on his deal. We could have easily swapped Price to the A’s for Cespedes or early for Russell, even possibly Walker for the M’s when they were firmly in the Wildcard race plus other player.

Yet we held out for the last minute, chasing another miracle. And we completely got hosed, the only glimmer of hope in this Price trade is a single A prospect. How sad is that? A Cy Young winner, pitching his ass off, with over a year of control for a single A infielder. Andrew Friedman completely set this team back years with this trade. We didn’t get MLB quality players, we didn’t stock our farm system, we basically took what was left, all due to chasing a pipe dream.

But all you were right, I don’t know shit about baseball, I was an idiot for suggesting ALL of these things. Like I said over and over, Andrew Friedman was about as much of a contributing factor of the Ray success over the last few season as John Schuerholz was to the Braves during their decade of success. Pitching hides so many personnel/trade issues and decisions that the worst GM can look like a genius. Andrew Friedman is a numbers man, he’s not a GM and the locker room has to feel like a morgue today due to this BS trade. Today’s Price trade value was closer to the value of a Zobrist trade. How sad is that?

But once again, I’m an idiot, I don’t know crap about baseball, I just got lucky on all these observations and suggestions. And know they weren’t after the fact statements, you can go back and check my posts.
Let’s keep chasing miracle comebacks, we’ll surely be successful. Thanks so much Andrew Friedman you just set this team back to the green uniform days in a single day.
