USATSI_7966512_154511044_lowresThe GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Pirates 6, RAYS 5 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Evan Longoria. We have been seeing signs that he is starting to warm up and his home run last night was the best sign yet. It was on a good pitch down-and-in that most right-handed hitters would swing right over. But Longo golfed it out. Here is the video. That is Longo at his best.

THE BAD: Chris Archer. Big Tree gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in 7 innings on 7 hits, but the big downfall were the 2 leadoff walks. Archer walked just 2 batters, but both lead off an inning and both eventually scored. In fact, the Pirates scored 4 runs in those innings. …Ben Zobrist. If the Rays are going to do anything this season, they need more from Zobrist. After getting 8 hits in one 4-game stretch, Zobrist is now just 3-24 in the last 8 games. The good news is he does have 6 walks in those 8 games, but his .326 OBP needs to be better.

THE TELLING: Jose Molina’s double was his first extra-base hit since last September, snapping a drought of 45 straight games without a double, triple, or home run. That is a club record…Jeremy Hellickson will not start one of the games on Friday and will get at least one more rehab start with Durham. Marc Topkin speculates that it will be Nate Karns or Alex Colome in the double-header…The Rays are now 31-48, 4.5 games behind the Red Sox for 4th place in the East.

THE JUNKYARD DOGS WEBTOPIA

  • David Price admitted that he has been in a bad mood recently because of all the trade speculation. [TampaBay.com]
  • DOWN ON THE FARM [boxscores] Durham lost 2-1 with Enny Romero giving up both runs (1 earned) in 6 innings with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks. Mikie Mahtook had 1 of the Bulls’ 3 hits. He also stole his 12th base….In a crazy game, the Montgomery Biscuits scored 3 in the top of the 9th to erase a 2-1 deficit, only to blow the lead in the bottom of the 9th and then get the game-winner in the top of the 10th on a 2-out wild pitch…Meanwhile, Charlotte lost in the 10th after scoring 1 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game on an Ariel Soriano RBI-double…Casey Gillaspie went 3-5 with a double and an RBI for Hudson Valley.

I can’t remember if we have discussed this before, but have you ever noticed how Brian Anderson has a postgame Rays Lost Face which differs greatly from his Rays Won Face?

This is a good pitch to most right-handed batters. But when Evan Longoria is on his game, this is right in his wheel house. Notice the angle of the bat. That is a golf swing.

Look at that form!

These were the Pirates’ keys to winning the game, which were apparently just puns on being in Florida that have nothing to do with baseball.

  1. Rob says:

Once the Rays’ brass trades Price and calls time of death on this season they will be able to move on and will most likely begin to play better. At some point you have to admit this season is a failure and begin preparing for next season and beyond, and the sooner the better. They would have to go 19-2 to reach Maddon’s arbitrary goal of getting to 50-50, so that’s not going to happen. When that officially becomes impossible, what will his next goal be? You can’t keep moving the bar down until you find success.

  2. Jeff says:

Just get rid of Price already. He wants big money but he doesn’t want to get traded, so he wants the impossible. Make him someone else’s headache.

  3. Art Corrales says:

And he can take that fat slob catcher Molina with him .
