USATSI_7913974_154511044_lowresThe GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 2, Mariners 0 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Jake Odorizzi. We’ll have more on this later today, but Odorizzi appears to have turned the corner and figured some things out. His last 2 starts: 11 innings, 6 hits, 18 strikeouts, 4 walks, and no runs. A pitcher like Odorizzi still needs to work into the 7th inning, but this is a promising start.

THE BAD: Ben Zobrist. As we speculated yesterday, Ben Zobrist dislocated his thumb. He expects to go on the DL. However Joe Maddon said the team will wait to see how he feels today.

THE TELLING: Reports from Durham are tha Cole Figueroa has been sent to Anaheim in case Ben Zobrist goes on the DL, but no move is official yet…Enny Romero was called up as a precautionary move because Erik Bedard felt more sore than normal. But Romero never made it to Seattle. He got a call in Detroit (where he was waiting for a connecting flight) and told to go back to Durham…Former Rays infielder Jeff Keppinger was designated for assignment by the White Sox. A reunion would seem unlikely…

  1. Dave L says:

Zobrist is getting the rest you called for Gus, right?.....

Maddon said it was the first knuckle of the thumb, not the one in the meat of the hand which could have been worse, we all have had that one.

Yunels walk induced RBI was off an 0-2 count. Shelton's dream at bat.

Now its time for SRod or Logan to take advantage of the opportunity

    • Gus says:

Not exactly what I had in mind for Z's rest, but if it is a week or less, it could be a benefit. His back caused him to miss some spring work, and my observation iis that maybe his back not being 100% has caused his LH swing to be a little off. He is way more anxious, swinging at bad pitches and grounding himself out.

Great pitching all around last two days when they really needed it. The offense is still pretty awful. When a not-full time no-hit catcher leads your team in RBI in mid-may, you may have offensive issues . . . .

Either the radar gun in Seattle runs hot or our pitchers are starting to finally get loose with some warmer temps. Seemed like evey pitcher was at their season high on the gun this series.

      • Beth says:

I wonder about that Seattle radar gun. I didn't really follow Monday's game (who could stand it?) but when Odorizzi and Price were both several ticks above their norms, I thought a fast gun could likely be the explanation.

        • Dave L says:

Maddon actually questioned it in the wrap up games presser carried on Rays live, suggesting 'thier gun' was registering high.

  2. Jason says:

I still say something has to change with our pathetic offense and my scape goat is still Shelton. Two very nice outings by Price, Odorizzi and co were almost wasted thanks to a terrible offense yet again.

  3. Brianknowsbest says:

For all those worried about Wil Myers. Including myself, ( im worrie but not that worried). I took the liberty to look up Wil batting average in durham on May 14th of last year. He was batting .261. It wasnt till end of may and june when he started to go on a tear. Just thought it was worth pointing out.
