Playing A Little Pepper

With a win tonight, the Rays would move past the Red Sox by percentage points in the standings, although they would technically be tied and the Sox would still be up by 1 game in the all-important loss column…Sean Rodriguez leads the Rays with 5 home runs…The Rays are just 5-23 when the starting pitcher is knocked out before the end of the 6th inning…Jose Molina and Ryan Hanigan have combined to throw out 36.7% of base stealers (best in the AL), up from 21.7% last season (4th worst in MLB).

Lest anyone thinks these positive Molina stats point to glimmer of hope in the decision to keep him for one final, consider this…..

Lobaton is now the Nats #1 of 3 catchers . After throwing out a measly 16% and 14% for the Rays the past 2 years, this year he is up to 41%! (7 CS and 10 SB)

Also his sabermetric defensive stats with the Rays were a bunch of minuses and this year they are a bunch of pluses, I didnt bother to try to decipher them exactly. So he has gotten better at the finer points of catching apparently over in the NL.

Plus his .650 OPS is ok for a catcher.

To be also fair the stealing stuff also has to do in part with Bedard and Odorizzi being Jedi Masters at holding down the running game while Moore not so much.

Fire Derek Shelton. Dear God fire Derek Shelton. Evan Longoria is now a slap hitter. Myers has hit a home run in one game this year – Just one game for God sakes! The guys that were average to below average are now about as effective as the average NL pitcher. I mean, if a few guys were slumping and a few guys were raking we could say this was normal. But when virtually every single hitter on the team sucks wind for the majority of the season that’s got to tell you there’s something wrong with the process.

My Bad. I see Myers has 4 home runs. Was thinking he just had the 2 in the one game. Forget everything I said about Derek Shelton.

      Heck of job, Sheltie!!

Hard to get overly hopeful when the offense has scored only 8 runs in the last 4 games. But…2 in a row. Nice crowd at the trop tonight too! The Porch area is a great spot to catch the game on the cheap.
Dare I say it? Nah…it’s still early. :)

What I can’t figure out is why any player who is slumping would continue to listen to this guy. Most, if not all, of the Rays have been playing ball since they were 4-5 years old. They must have encountered at least one worthless coach before Shelton and managed to still end up in the Bigs. Just ignore the SOB. What can happen? Shelton goes crying to Maddon that he’s being ignored? He must be somehow connected to JoMa’s brood through marriage or adoption.

Ugly, but I’ll take ugly against those bastards.

Now if our horse, Price, can just not spit the bit today.
