Blue Jays 3, RAYS 0 (boxscore)
THE GOOD: Bullpen. Outside of Josh Lueke, and nobody is expecting much there, the bullpen kept the Rays in the game. The other four relievers combined for 2.1 shutout innings, giving up just 1 hit and 2 walks.
THE BAD: Offense. The Rays were shutout just 8 times in 2013. The only thing keeping the Rays from a pair of shutouts in the first 3 games were a couple of meaningless runs at the end of game 2. Hits are going to come and go and things will even out, especially when the team goes 1-17 with runners in scoring position in the last 2 games. The troublesome part from last night was the 12 strikeouts and just 2 walks. That ratio needs to be a lot closer to 1:1 or the offense is going to struggle…Matt Moore. Moore fell behind too many batters, throwing first-pitch strikes to just 12 of 26 batters. MLB average in 2013 was 60.3%…10,808. That was the attendance last night. On the down side, only 4 games had a smaller crowd last year. On the bright side, two of those games last year were against the Blue Jays. On the downside, I am hearing tonight will not be any better. On the bright side, this weekend’s attendance is supposed to be much better.
THE TELLING: It looks like the broadcast on Sun Sports has returned to normal after a couple of games. The angle was much different during game 1 in which you could only see the first row of fans from the centerfield camera. In game 2 it was up to 2-3 rows of fans behind home plate. Last night it was up to 4-5 rows, which is what it looked like last year…The Rays are 19-0-1 in the last 20 series against the Blue Jays at home…David DeJesus was available to pinch-hit last night (bruised foot)…Rays top four minor league teams begin play today…Chris Gimenez has been cut by the Rangers. If he clears waivers, he could end up back with the Rays in Durham.
