Red Sox 7, RAYS 4 (boxscore)
THE GOOD: Erik Bedard. I hesitate to put Bedard here because he really wasn’t that good, but he was better and well, there was a lack of better options. Bedard did hold the Red Sox to 1 run, but because he is still afraid to pitch in the strikezone, he was gone after just 5 innings having thrown 104 pitches.
THE BAD: The Bullpen. The normally reliable bullpen imploded. After having just tied the game in the top of the 6th inning, the bullpen gave up 5 runs in the bottom half and the game was essentially over. Brandon Gomes started the bleeding walking 2 of the first 3 batters of the inning. We had seen early on this season that Maddon was going to use Gomes in bigger spots this year. This time it didn’t work.
THE TELLING: Kevin Kiermaier, CJ Riefenhauser, and Mikie Mahtook are injured for the Bulls. Mahtook was hit in the face with a pitch and will miss up to 4 weeks. Riefenhauser is on the DL with an oblique strain.
