The New York Yankees are still the most valuable team in baseball with a value of $2.5 billion according to the latest franchise valuations released by Forbes.com.

The least valuable team is our own Tampa Bay Rays, with a value of $485 million, or about 19% of the value of the Yankees and $5 million behind the Kansas City Royals.

Here is a look at the Tampa Bay Rays’ franchise values since 2003, which includes a 132% increase since Stuart Sternberg became the controlling owner.

Any insight to the jump from 2012 to 2013? Was that the year the new network TV was negotiated?

The Rays TV contract ends in 2015 or 2016 if I’m not mistaken. That will drive up their value even more. I believe 2012 or 2013 is when MLB signed the new tv contract which gave all teams $25 million or so per season so that is probably part of the jump in value over that time
