According to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, the Rays have spoken with Bedard about accepting an assignment to triple-A. However, with so many injuries to starting pitchers this spring, that seems unlikely.
That means, barring a trade, the fifth starter will either be Jake Odorizzi or Cesar Ramos. Maddon has said repeatedly that the decision would not be based on spring stats.
Considering how well Ramos has been throwing recently, it may be too tempting to pass him up and go with Odorizzi who is still developing a new changeup. However, with Juan Carlos Oviedo doubtful to be on the opening day roster, the bullpen may be too thin to move Ramos to the rotation.
