When Alex Cobb is on his game he kills a lot of worms with a ton of ground ball outs and that is exactly what we saw against the Blue Jays today.

Cobb faced 12 batters in his 3+ innings of work. Of those 12 batters, Cobb induced seven into ground ball outs and another batter reached on an infield ground ball single. Of the other four batters, one struck out, one walked, one flied out, and the other reached on a line drive single.

12 batters. 8 ground balls. 1 fly ball. And only 1 ball hit hard.

Here are all 8 ground balls.

  1. Gus says:

I know Maddon was discounting spring success, but I was the same guy bemoaning how bad the Rays looked last spring and am glad to see them showing so well already this spring. We lost the division last April. And I will always believe that the crummy spring the Rays had in 2013 was part of that.

Starting pitching and power both showing up. That is very encouraging.

  2. Geoff Peterson says:

Seitzer looks like he's ready for Durham and maybe a September callup to get a look at his power at this level.

  3. Dave L says:

Its nice to see that everyone made it through the first week healthy. Nice first week of practicing baseball

    • Beth says:

Oops, spoke too soon! Today, DDJ scratched for soreness, Zobrist scratched for stiff neck and Peralta pulled for soreness.

      • Dave L says:

Yes I was being somewhat facetious in that its too soon to draw any conclusions other than simple health and lack of injuries.

Winning the grapefruit league would be significant but winning the first week of March doesn't tell me much.
