Jose Molina3 days until Rays pitchers and catchers report.

16 days until the first spring training game.

47 days until opening day.

A few more odds and ends

  • Not sure why Jose Lobaton would refuse to show up to camp, but his agent says he will be there. []
  • Ryan Hannigan has a dog. It won something. []
  • Was Mark Dominic fired because of Josh Freeman? [JoeBucsFan]
  • Finally, if you enjoy what should be a private and special moment and putting it on display for the whole world to see, here is video of Alex Cobb proposing to his girlfriend.

Its not bad to go into camp with 3 catchers, even though its obvious we won't have 3 rostered catchers on opening day.

With 60 starting and backup catchers around the league at least one will probably go down in the month of March at least temporarily, hopefully not one of ours....although I may be the only poster here who would not welcome such a development....

I am not saying automatically Lobaton is the 61st best catcher in Pro baseball but he had an OPS of .714 that was 17th in 2013 amongst the 35 MLB catchers with at least 250 PA. Above league average for a catcher.

Other teams place more of an emphasis on offense at the catcher position so he will be on somebody's 25 man roster come early April at the latest.

Hanigan was in the bottom 4 of virtually every offensive category, hopefully that was due to injuries which have since healed. But Hanigan has one cool stat line. He had the highest BB/SO ratio of all catchers. He is a zen master of pitch recognition and zone discipline but last year at least he couldn't get his bat take advantage of it. I found stats earlier in the offseason where he had bad BABIP last year but I can't find where I got it from.
