MLB: APR 27 Red Sox v RaysHere are a few odds and ends…

  • Pedro Figueroa, who was placed on waivers to make room for Grant Balfour on the 40-man roster, has been claimed by the Rangers. [@TBTimes_Rays]
  • ESPN.com on why the Rays’ farm system is ranked just 23rd: “they’ve been crushed by the graduations of Wil Myers and Chris Archer last year plus several unproductive drafts.” Of course, that will change in a hurry when the Rays trade David Price. [ESPN]
  • The Rays have spent $49.5 million on free agents this winter. That’s 13th out of 30 MLB teams, but more than $400 million behind the Yankees. [BI Sports]
  • Major League Baseball has approved protective caps for pitchers. Alex Cobb will try it. Brandon McCarthy will not. [BI Sports]
  • If you want the autographs of Evan Longoria, Wil Myers, or David Price at FanFest, it will cost you $125. [TampaBay.com]
  • Carlos Pena has signed with the Angels. [@TBTimes_Rays]
  • The Mets and Orioles are still showing interest in Fernando Rodney. [MLBTR]
  • And so are the Mariners. [Fox Sports]
  • I don’t think it is any surprise that random fans occasionally make stupid trade proposals. If you want to read a bunch of funny proposals for David Price, here you go. [Deadspin]

And if you were unaware, it is cold outside in most parts of the country and there is even some snow. Here is a fun GIF of Wool E. Bull impersonating LeBron James.

  1. Dean says:

Cork, anything to the rumors of the Rays interested in A.J. Burnett? Andrew Jackson, aka Peter Gammons, is reporting this.

    • Cork Gaines says:

Burnett would make sense IF the Rays trade Price otherwise I cant see why they would add that much salary. think of it this way: the Rays could have Price at $14 million or Burnett, some top prospects, and maybe a utility guy for $15-16 million and still be a World Series caliber team.
