MLB: Spring Training-Tampa Bay Rays at Pittsburgh PiratesSam Fuld’s career with the Rays now appears to be over as the Rays have non-tendered the backup outfielder according to Jerry Crasnick (via Twitter). The Rays also non-tendered reliever Wesley Wright according to Marc Topkin (via Twitter).

Fuld was eligible for free agency for the first time and was projected to make about $900,000 through arbitration. Considering how cheap his contract was expected to be, this must mean that the Rays did not think he would make the opening day roster.

Keep in mind that the Rays already have four outfielders guaranteed spots on the opening day roster, with Wil Myers, Desmond Jennings, David DeJesus, and Matt Joyce. The Rays also have Brandon Guyer who may be more useful to the Rays as a potential right-handed DH option. Guyer is out of minor league options and must be on the big league roster or be exposed to waivers.

Sorry to see Sammy go. He gave the Rays fans all he had. But…a club like the Rays need more out of their bench players than a Mendoza line batting average. Hopefully Guyer finally shows us why he was an important part of the Garza deal.
