Delmon YoungLet’s catch up on a few of the minor news and notes…

  • Andrew Friedman says he does not expect to sign a free agent starting pitcher this winter, like the Rays did last year with Roberto Hernandez. [RaysRadio]
  • The Orioles may be close to signing Grant Balfour. Lots of chatter linking the two sides. [Jon Heyman]
  • Delmon Young is working out at first base “increasing his versatility.” We’ve been saying for a while that Young is nice to have in September when there are extra spots on the bench. But the Rays don’t need a DH-only player when they will have 4 or 5 outfielders on the roster already. Playing first base might increase his chances as an if-all-else-fails option, but he is still a long shot. He certainly would not come in and be an everyday first baseman. [Ken Rosenthal]
  • Our old friend Jason Hammel is getting a lot of love on the free agent market with 12 teams showing interest. [MLBTR]

  1. Roger Mallett says:

The Rays need to keep Delmon Young he is affordable and a very quality at bat. Rays have had terrible luck with the DH. I don't get why they would let him go. He seems to have matured as a player.
