USATSI_7496753_154511044_lowresHere are a few more minor notes and rumors…

  • The latest player the Rays are looking at to play first base is Juan Uribe. Ken Rosenthal says Uribe would also be used at second base and to back up Evan Longoria at third base. Hmmm? A right-handed bat who would play first base, second base, and third base? That sounds an awful  lot like Sean Rodriguez. This suggests that Rodriguez may be close to being traded, possibly to the Marlins. [Ken Rosenthal]
  • Another possibility is Ike Davis of the Mets. It is not clear if the Rays have contacted the Mets (they probably have), but there is plenty of speculation that the two sides could match up. Davis makes more sense as a most-days first baseman than Uribe. The two could platoon. [Ken Davidoff]
  • Ryan Roberts has signed a minor league deal with the Cubs with an invite to spring training. [Marc Topkin]
  • I had forgotten about this. In 2007 the Rays tried to trade for Heath Bell and after he was traded to the Padres, the Rays tried to trade for him again. [Sign on San Diego]
  • The Orioles may be close to signing Grant Balfour to a 2-year contract. [MLBTR]
