Delmon YoungHere are some more minor notes buzzing from the Winter Meetings…

  • The Marlins are showing interest in Delmon Young. As I have stated before, with only four bench spots, it doesn’t make sense for the Rays to sign Young if his only job is to be a DH against left-handed pitchers. That’s 100 games in which his role would be reduced to pinch-hitter. [Joe Frisaro]
  • Jon Heyman says the Rays are showing interest in infielder Mark Reynolds to play first base. Reynolds split the 2013 season between Cleveland and the Yankees, hitting 21 home runs with a .306 OBP. In 2009 he hit 44 home runs with the Diamondbacks. [Jon Heyman]
  • Jon Heyman also says the Rays are one of several teams showing interest in Jamey Carroll. The infielder hit just .211 in 73 games this past season with the Twins and Royals. [Jon Heyman]
  • Marc Topkin reports that the Rays may sign minor league pitcher Jordan Norberto who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Norberto was one of the players suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs obtained from the Biogenesis clinic. He pitched in just 3 games in 2013, all at triple-A. The lefty did make 39 appearances for the A’s in 2012. [Marc Topkin]

    3 observations

    1) There is likely no 2013 Loney out there in our price range- an everyday first baseman

    2) All the potential first base prospects that have been floated have serious holes in their offensive games. Some could only be platooned.

    3) Virtually all are sub par defenders.

If all three are true, why not look for a big outfielder or 3rd baseman on the other side of 29 who is slowing down and make give him a chance to learn 1st. There are more of those out there with better offense than those so far floated who currently play first base. I wouldn’t be surprised if Delmon reportedly learning it isn’t directly the result of the Rays urging it. Most first baseman end up there by default anyway.

If I hear another manager being interviewed at the winter meetings with gaping holes in his roster say he’s happy to into April with his current crew I am going to puke.

Here’s a real quick list i threw together of who is left on the FA market of who does, could, or might play first base for the Rays, somewhere near their price range. Like Dave L said, not much to choose from.

Looks like the Mariners are grabbing up all the 1st basemen. They’re looking to take all the 1st basemen off the market so the Rays will HAVE to trade with them! Pretty shrewd, really…
