Here is the roster that the Rays will use for tonight’s Wild Card game. Keep in mind, this is a roster for a 1-game series. Some thoughts on the roster can be seen below…

Notes on the roster…

  • This is a 1-game playoff series roster, so there are just 9 pitchers.
  • Both Matt Moore and Chris Archer are on the roster, presumably as long-relief options in case: a) Alex Cobb gets knocked out early; or b) the game goes into extra innings
  • Wesley Wright is in the bullpen, and Brandon Gomes is not.
  • Kevin Kiermaier is on the bench again to be used as a late-inning defensive replacement.
  • Delmon Young is on the roster and Luke Scott is not.
  • The Rays played the tie-breaker game with 38 players on the roster.

Kind of surprised there is no Odorizzi or Gomes in the pen. Really surprised Kiermaier is on the roster over Luke Scott. I am a big fan of the kid, but we already have the Legend of Sam Fuld for defense in the outfield, and as well as he played in Montgomery and his brief stint at Durham I don’t think anyone really thinks Kevin is quite ready for MLB pitching. Also kind of surprised they kept 3 catchers instead of an extra arm given the way Joe likes to mix and match. In Friedman and Maddon we trust, so I guess these must be the right moves.

He’s not in there to bat against anyone. He’s in there for defense and pinch running plain and simple. Scott has been a complete waste of a roster spot pretty much all year. We kept three catchers because Gimenez can play multiple positions and if we pinch hit for Lobaton or Molina or we pinch run for one of them, it is good to have a back up catcher available.

The thought on having Gimenez is that he’s also a potential infield replacement at 3rd and possibly first should something we dont even want to contemplate happening. KJ and Srod are additional 2B/SS.

Why is Moore on the roster? He is pitching Game 1 in Boston if we win…if he pitches who pitches game 1 ? Price is set for Game 2 ….Can’t go into the boston series at a disadvantage!

    • OriginalTom says:

Moore will be behind a plate of glass that says use this pitcher only in the case of emergency. I.E. 15th inning.

      • Chris D says:

Pretty much this. If that actually DID happen, then you’d probably see Odorizzi play in Boston.

        • Brent says:

Won’t we be starting Archer on Friday, GM 1? He’ll be on 5 days rest, then Price Sat, Cobb Monday and finally Moore on Tue?

          • OriginalTom says:

They have not announced a Friday starter and I assumed in my post above it would be Moore but it certainly could be Archer instead.

          • Chris D says:

I assume it would be Moore so he’s available for a potential game 5.

    • Dave L says:

With the spacing of playoff and world series baseball you really only need 3 (or even 2 briefly) starting pitchers. So perhaps Archer/Moore will be the sort of combined 3th starter with one ready to relieve the other at any sign of distress, most likely Moore would be the the first pitcher in such circumstances. I’m fine with that.

Assuming we advance, I expect Cobb and Price to pitch ever 5th day each and trump the other two when it is possible.

A little surprised at 3 catchers… but other than Scott who else would you want at the end of the bench anyways, I guess.

must be nice to have so many interchangeable parts….
