Tim BeckhamTim Beckham has been called up by the Rays and will soon make his big league debut, five years after he was the top pick of the 2008 draft.

As we discussed at the beginning of September, it made sense that the Rays would add Beckham considering Yunel Escobar was the only true shortstop on the roster. The only question was whether it would happen on September 1 or after the Durham Bulls season ended. Well, their loss in the triple-A championship game tonight was the end of their run and now Beckham is a member of the Rays.

Jake Odorizzi, who started tonight’s game for the Bulls is also expected to be called up. However, his move may not be official until later this week.

In addition, Freddy Guzman has been called up to serve as a “pinch-running specialist.” Guzman was able to be added to the 40-man roster because Brandon Guyer was transferred to the 60-day DL, even though he has been playing for the Bulls on a “rehab assignment” the last couple of weeks. Amazing.

Maybe Odorizzi will make Hellickson's next start.

This kid is still only 23, I hope they can find a spot for him or get a decent return in a trade.

Someone needs to take Helly's sport in the rotation. Odorizzi might be the person. Helly has had all of the chances and more. Time to not use Matt Joyce as DH...he is in a slump...

I wonder if Beckham is a good enough SS defensively to get a few starts (you might recall he lost his SS job to Lee before the season). Escobar could use a night or two off. Othwerwise, tough to see him getting much playing time. I know one thing for sure -- come hell or highwater, he is getting an AB this season so it gets the Rays off the "No.1 overall pick who never made the majors" list (currently occupied only by Brien Taylor and some catcher from the Rangers in the 1970s). Freidman doesn't want that one on his resume. If he hadn't missed so much time last season with drug suspension, he might have really helped this year's team.
