As if things wouldn’t be tough enough for the Rays having to play a tiebreaker game in Arlington on Monday night, now the Rangers will have an extra All-Star in their lineup with the return of Nelson Cruz, the Rangers announced today.
Cruz was hitting .269 with 27 home runs in 108 games when he was suspended by Major League Baseball for 50 games for using performance-enhancing drugs and his role in the Biogenesis scandal. His 50-game suspension ended with today’s win over the Angels that clinched a spot in the play-in game against the Rays.
Cruz’s history against David Price may have been a factor in the decision to have Cruz play on Monday. In his career, Cruz is 9-21 (.429) with three home runs against Monday’s starter for the Rays.
The Rangers were mum about whether or not they would welcome Cruz back for the postseason. That question was answered after today’s game.
