Angels 2, RAYS 0 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Jake Odorizzi. Odorizzi deserved a better fate in his return to the big leagues, holding the Angels to just 1 run in 5 innings.

THE BAD: No Offense. Desmond Jennings and Ben Zobrist were at the top of the order and went 2-5 with 2 walks and a hit-by-pitch. The rest of the lineup went 1-24 with 3 walks. The Rays were also just 1-13 with runners on base. The lone hit came in the 9th inning when the right fielder misplayed Yunel Escobar’s deep flyball into a double. But because it looked like the ball would be caught, Wil Myers could not score on the hit.

THE TELLING: Matt Moore had a rough night during his rehab start for triple-A Durham. In 4 innings, he gave up 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. He struck out just 2… Dan Johnson has been released by the Yankees triple-A club. In 133 games he hit .253 with 21 home runs. He last played in the big leagues last year with the White Sox and in the last 6 seasons, he has played a total of 96 games in the big leagues. Of course, he had a couple of big games with the Rays…The Rays are now 75-57, 2.5 games behind the Red Sox and 4.0 games ahead of the Orioles for the second Wild Card spot.

  • So, about that trade. The Royals are going to miss the playoffs. Again. For the 28th straight year. That’s bad. [BI Sports]
  • BJ Upton’s house in Tampa is for sale. It will set you back $1.6 million. [The Big Lead]
  • The Bucs played their final preseason game last night, the one game all year I won’t watch. JoeBucsFan, has everything we need to know. [JBF]

You should be ashamed of yourself. A piece with your name on it at BI calls us the Devil Rays. How much should we fine you for that? 🙂

  2. Political Man says:

Time to pick up Dan Johnson and pinch hit him in the 9th for any tying run at the plate. We can't lose in that situation.

  3. Rome says:

I would rather have Leslie Anderson than Dan Johnson. He moves better, and has better numbers in AAA. Frankly I would rather see Belnome who is younger and can play various infield positions than have Dan Johnson. Nothing person. His swing is STILL long. He has a perfect swing for AAA. He doesn't fun well, and is stiff looking when fielding. It's nothing on Dan Johnson. I would have loved to have a Dan Johnson in 2005-2007. The Rays are in a pennant race and need players not mascots. I would rather have Fred McGriff go for the ever evading 500th home run than have Dan Johnson wear anything besides a suit and tie in a Rays locker room.

    • Sarah says:

The fact that Anderson has had success at AAA and never merited a look in September has always mystified me. If he has no chance of ever playing in the majors, why keep him at all?

    • Dave L says:

I went to Port Charlotte and watched Leslie for one game.

The only thing I can say is he looked slow in everything he did. Thats the only way I can describe it. He did not have quick hands through the zone. He seemed to be a defensive liability as well.

They keep him around because they owe him money and he can help win AAA games. His contract is not that of a guy coming up.

Apparently he is a classic AAAA player and the Rays recognize that and I trust their judgement.
