Playing A Little Pepper

Tonight’s DH is a middle infielder that was in the minors last week (Ryan Roberts)…Tonight is the first time the Rays have faced the Giants since 2004 and the first time the Rays have played the defending World Champs since 2010 (Yankees)…Tomorrow is the second Joe Maddon Gnome giveaway…The Rays are considering another $2 kids ticket giveaway. Of course, if it were me, they would do it for every weekday game.

  1. salter says:

The Giants are NOT the 'World Champions'.

They are the World Series Champs, MLB Champs, National Champs, whatever you want to call them. I wonder how the champions of Nippon Baseball in Japan feel about the SF Giants being referred to as the 'World Champs'??

That's one American trait/description that really annoys many non-Yanks!

Anyway, go Rays, hopefully another strong start for Archer πŸ™‚

  2. Rob says:

At the game. Longoria looks lost at the plate.

  3. Ken says:

Sooner or later someone is going to have to comment on the fact that Longo is costing us ballgames. Yes he's the face of the franchise. Yes he's given us great moments. Yes, I expect to get many responses calling me a traitor, an idiot and god knows what else. But....for six weeks now he has sucked, he has cost us many of the few games we have lost and he us starting to put undue pressure on the rest of the lineup. JoMa, please, if you insist on playing him, move him down in the order. Please....

    • JJ says:

Not to mention the pressure on the rotation.

    • Dave L says:

The weird thing is his defense is still spectacular. Right left forward backward throwing, hes looks like he's moving fine. The barehand was prime Longo.

Did Myers steal his hitting soul?

Every since Wil shot into orbit, Evan went into the tank.

      It looks 100% mental now

    • Mr. Smith 1980 says:

You may be overstating his detriment a little.
Yes, he's lost at the plate and has missed some prime opportunities, but to say that he's costing the Rays games (considering that they've only lost a handful in the last month) is a bit ambitious. One could surmise that his lack of timely hitting contributed to some losses but that his stellar (as per usual) fielding has helped win some.

I agree that he needs a trip to the 6 spot for a while.

      This lineup looks appropriate (-ish):

      1 Jennings
      2 Zobrist
      3 Loney
      4 Myers
      5 Escobar
      6 Longoria
      7 Scott
      8 Lobaton/Molina
      9 Joyce/Fuld/SRod

  4. Dean says:

Actually, Longo probably soon will lead off. That's Joe's recipe for pulling a player out of a slump. Usually works, too..

  5. Dave L says:

    I will be there tonite!

picked 7 random games at the beginning of the season still trying to use up my leftover playoff money from like what ? 2 years ago?

Lucky to get Lincecum v Price!

  6. Andy C. says:

Was at this game & the offense was indeed offensive. Obviously, there was yet another power outage at the Trop this week. πŸ™ Re: Longoria, hitting lead-off may be the best change, but I think Maddon will count on him realizing it's August now & morph into the improved version of himself that historically emerges during the 5th month of the season.

Archer did well for the most part, but I was surprised that the Maddon/Hickey combo were slow in identifying potential problems in 7th innings. In addition to the production the Giants were having, at least 2 of their recent outs were very well hit. Despite that, NO ONE was even up in the bullpen! In my opinion, Archie might have benefitted from a Hickey visit during that stretch, too. No matter his superb success, he's still a rookie!!
