USATSI_7304908_154511044_lowresThe Rays have claimed left-handed reliever Wesley Wright off waivers from the Houston Astros.

[UPDATE] To make room for Wright, the Rays have demoted Josh Lueke according to Roger Mooney of TBO.com.

Wright has spent all or part of each of the last six seasons with the Astros. This season he has a 3.92 ERA (4.06 FIP) in 54 appearances with 40 strikeouts and 16 walks in 41.1 innings.

Wright will join the team tomorrow against the Mariners. A corresponding move has not yet been announced. However, the Rays currently have just 11 pitchers and an extra player on the bench. Unless there is an injury we are unaware of, Ryan Roberts could be sent down. Another possibility is to send Josh Lueke back to Durham.

The Rays will also have to make room for both Matt Moore and Alex Cobb, both of whom are expected to be activated this week.

Wright is making $1.025 million this season in his first year of arbitration eligibility.

You've gotta respect the Brain-trust for making semi-aggressive roster moves. They do not want to go quietly into the night whilst citing their low payroll as an excuse.

Since the beginning of last season he's thrown 94 innings with a 3.56 ERA and 94/33 K/BB ratio. 28 years old, cheap contract.

WHY was he waived? By the Astros of all teams. This makes no sense to me, but I'm not complaining.

It's different than before the non-waiver trade deadline. Here is a good explanation: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/08/explaining-august-trades.html

So not only do we pay him, we owe the stros something, most likely a player and I'm sure they want someone young not a Roberts, as the moves they have been making seem to point towards smart rebuilding.

I assume he was waived because of his contract. $1M is "cheap", but was the Astro's 2nd highest paid player. So they save the rest of that and get whatever the Rays pay them. That's significant for a team with a $19M/year payroll.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the headline here was this:

What were the Rays thinking to trade away Jaso for this guy?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious and the whole thing made perfect sense. I can't figure it out.

Looking forward to Wright doing good things.
