USATSI_7391934_154511044_lowresThe Rays announced today that they have acquired David DeJesus from the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later or “cash considerations.”

The Rays designated Jason Bourgeois for assignment to make room on the roster. DeJesus is expected to be in uniform tonight.

The Rays will have to pay DeJesus at least $2.4 million. He is still owed ~$900K of his $4.25M salary this season. There is also a $6.5 million option for next season. The Rays can buy out that option for $1.5 million.

DeJesus had played just three games with the Nationals after being acquired from the Cubs earlier in the week. In 84 games with the Cubs, he hit .250 with six home runs, a .330 OBP (.325 wOBA) and is a very good defensive outfielder.

Bourgeois will likely clear waivers and accept an assignment to triple-A.

Seems Jason Bourgeois would be the guy to go back to Durham, but that means we have another left-handed left fielder to go with Joyce, Johnson and Fuld. Four lefties in left seems like a lot, with SRod your only righty option there.

  2. George says:

We all knew bourgeois time here was going to be short but lasted longer than expected. However, Fuld seems redundant at this point since Dejesus does everything Fuld does and is a much better hitter with his .330 obp. Guess Fuld goes back to his role as late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner

$2.4m seems like a lot to pay a light hitting left fielder for 2 months. I don’t know much about him, so maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

  4. George says:

knowing the rays, they will buy him out and try to resign him for cheaper like they did with luke scott

Goin’ for the Gusto, huh?! Go Rays!

  6. Gus says:

He is basically the LH version of BJ Upton from 2011-12; less powers but less ks and better obp; he can help. Nice thought here. Kudos to management.

Bourgious’ fielding gaffes probably were the straw that broke the back for him. You feel bad for guys, but you have to catch the ball for his role.

That’s a good point — probably saved Sam Fuld’s job. I get it’s a small sample size, but hard to call someone your defensive specialist if he blows two of the few chances he gets.

    • Rob says:

Given the history of new guys, I am expecting a game-winning hit from DeJesus tonight.

I guess it helps to have (de)Jesus on your team! lol
