Joe is back with his post-game thoughts….

You pitch to Evan Longoria, and you pitch around Wil Myers. It’s downright amazing how this Rays season has evolved.

There Rays fans were in the first inning; many secretly celebrating a decent at bat by Longoria with a well hit line-drive out. Then Myers steps up and belts his first pitch into Pinellas Park to give the Rays a 2-0 lead.

The Giants didn’t challenge Myers again.

Rays win 4-3.

As Sam Fuld, who had the game-winning single, said after the game, Myers has practically “been carrying us.”

What next? Will we learn Myers is dating Kelly Nash?

No, Joe hasn’t forgotten about the Rays lights-out bullpen. And any victory with Roberto Hernandez on the hill is found money. The sold-out Trop was pretty damn impressive, too.

Was it the Giants, the on the field promotion, or are the fans just simply getting interested?

    • Ken says:

I think a combo of the three Rob, with an emphasis on Door number three. I was at all the games this homestand and there was a lot of fan chatter about the players, Myers and Price in particular and the race for first.
IMO the 2$ Kids special was a great promo and the Rays should strategically continue it. The full house today was all local folks. It was electric all weekend. Great to see.
BTW, Myers is the anti-Puig, and this years ROY if he keeps playing his game.

  2. Pat says:

Hopefully the latter, Rob. I was at the game today, first in my experience with a crowd that large.

  3. Burn H. says:

I believe that it has a lot to do with winning. When you start being hyped by the media it has to help plus the season is winding down so fewer chances to see the Rays. All of a sudden there are only two months instead of six.

    • OriginalTom says:

In addition to fewer chance to see them, they only have 3 weekend series left in the season.

  4. Scot says:

Oddly, one could see Myers as the batter who "protects" Longo so that Longo sees more strikes. However, now that Myers is clearly the best batter on the team, he should see fewer strikes.

Fortunately, we can be pleased that Myers is being called on fewer BS strike calls and walking much more. The next question is, can Loney step up and continue to be the batter we have seen the first half of the season or will the years of mediocre batting with the Dodgers prove to be the true picture of Loney.

    • Ken says:

Loney, Joyce, Scott and Johnson...take your pick. One or more of these guys has to start protecting the kid. Maybe flip Zorilla to the 5 hole and flip a coin for a 2 hole hitter. Your post is spot on.

  5. Dave L says:

This team chemistry is off the charts.

Even a struggling Longo is still a team leader in attitude.

When any guy is lost everybody has his back.

Friedman has given us all the ingrediants for a perfect pot of Jambalaya.

Maddon et all keeps them all together.

We are even learning our hitting coach was never the problem, when bats leave the Rays they always regress to lower levels.

Best kept secret is the lower levels developing the skills and teaching The retooling of the wicked Torres, the perfect handling of Myers to bring him up MLB ready.

The Giants are dangerous though they may have a mediocre record but the Rays focused on the key bats and kept them silent throughout the series. We played them like we know them but they didnt know us.

Total organisational preparation was the key to winning this series. The Rays were better prepared than the Giants. I would give anything for us to be an NL team where money is less a key to success.
