Joe is back with his postgame thoughts…

The cool thing about how the Rays have been playing so well of late is, well, guys that were expected to play well are, and others have been perhaps playing over expectations.

Take Rat Tail for example. You may know him in some parts as “Wolverine.” But until Wolverine gets rid of that nasty tail on the back of his head, he will be Rat Tail.

Rat Tail has been on a tear, and he continued with a clutch hit today. With wunderkind Wil Myers on second and running on contact, Rat Tail hit an absolute rope to right field with the score tied at 3-3.

Given Myers’ speed, and his really good jump on contact, Rat Tail’s liner to right was more than enough for Myers to score the winning run, his third RBI of the afternoon.

If Rat Tail can continue hitting, along with Desmond Jennings, James Loney, Dirtbag and Zorilla, that’s more offense the Rays have had in a long time to go along with such good pitching.

This is a good team we are watching now.

Can't deny that the offense is there in a much bigger way than it has been in past years. But it also seems like a scary trend of being no-no'd for the first several innings is starting. Not fun to watch. Several of these wins in the past few weeks seemed a bit too close for comfort, given the level of competition. And of course letting a debut flirt with a no-no was embarassing. Let's hope we were simply playing to their level.

Longo's slash line for July is .136/.269/.205, after posting great numbers in June. Gotta consider these numbers when looking at Rays offensive trends lately. Hopefully rest over the break is all he needs. I can't see the Rays continuing to win without his big bat.

This IS a good team. I knew it would be eventually.
