5-15-2013 7-10-00 PMThe GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

Red Sox 9, RAYS 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Desmond Jennings Running. Jennings stole his first base since April 19, a stretch of 18 games. The Rays need Jennings to start running. As a team the Rays have just 21 stolen bases. Only 4 teams in the AL have fewer steals. The Rays have also been caught stealing 11 times, tied for the most in the AL…Cesar Ramos. Nice job by Ramos working 3 innings and saving the bullpen for tonight.

THE BAD: David Price. Price had to be pulled from the game in the third inning after suffering an injury. Price has a triceps strain, which in the big picture is a bit of a relief. However, he is expected to go on the DL…The Third Inning. The worst moment of course was David Price having to leave the game with a triceps injury. He was replaced by Jamey Wright who promptly gave up a double, a single, a walk, and a grand slam. In all the Sox scored 8 runs in the inning. It took Price and Wright 49 pitches to get through the inning. It was the first time the Rays had allowed 8 runs in an inning at home since 2010.

THE TELLING: Early speculation is that Jake Odorizzi will be called up to take David Price’s spot in the rotation. Odorizzi was one of the pitchers acquired in the James Shields trade with Kansas City and is the Rays’ 4th best prospect. The Rays are now 2-7 in Price’s 9 starts…The Rays are now 20-19, and remain 4.5 games behind the Yankees.

Factoring-in Price's injury and Wright's complete ineptitude, the third inning may have been the worse inning of the year so far (although it has some stiff competition from some of the blown-lead innings (i.e. the 9th inning v. Toronto last Monday)).

On a separate note: the Rays are working really hard at trying to make SRod a mini-Zorilla-esque uber-utility player.
I've never been a huge fan (of SRod), but at this point I'd much rather have a versatile SRod than an anemic Fuld (although Fuld certainly has his own roster-worthy attributes, of course).

If Price's season doesn't get any better, the Rays might be able to afford to keep him.

Both in person and on TV, I've noticed that in his last few starts Price has been grunting loudly, almost annoyingly, like a 14-year old Russian girl returning serve at the IMG-Bolleterri Academy. Not surprised he ended up hurting himself a little last night. I'd hope Hickey & Co. go back and look at his mechanics and stride. He's had stretches before where I've noted he's recoiling almost in his follow through. This year it seems he is really short-striding himself and almoost throwing from a dead stop. A bit of a mess, but glad it is not worse and he'll have time to get his head and mechanics straight. I hope it is not the MLB version of "the Madden Curse."

Could have used 2012 Wade Davis out of the pen last night. Wright was wrong in so many ways.

Price's delivery does look out of sorts at times, but the grunting has been a mainstay for quite a while now- including all of last year's Cy Young effort- it's annoying, like those guys at the gym who can't bench press without screaming.

Well...the Show is more "the Madden" of baseball games...but Lincecum & Evan were on the cover of the 2k series, just like Price this year. Yikes...
