RAYS 5, Marlins 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Alex Colome. Colome clearly had some first-game jitters. After striking out the first batter, he gave up two walks and a single, followed by a passed ball that scored a run. But after that, he settled down and retired 15 of the final 19 batters he faced, with 6 strikeouts and no walks. And boy was his stuff nasty. His fastball was as advertised, reaching 98 and getting a solid 5 swing-and-misses (that’s good for a fastball). And the changeup was much better than advertised. He got 9 swing-and-misses on that pitch. When the Rays do finally decide to trade Jeremy Hellickson, it feels like Colome’s upside is just as high as Chris Archer…Power Trip. With Matt Joyce’s home run, the Rays are now one of six teams to have 3 players with at least 9 home runs.

THE BAD: Jose Molina. CATCH. THE. DAMN. BALL. He was only charged with 2 passed balls, but there could have been at least two more. And usually Molina’s problem is blocking pitches. These were on pitches that should have been caught. Since the start of the 2012 season, Molina has 12 passed balls. The rest of the Rays catchers have 2.

THE TELLING: The Rays announced after the game that Chris Archer will start Saturday’s game. He will be the 8th starting pitcher used by the Rays this season. That matches the number of starting pitchers used last season. And one of those in 2012 was Cesar Ramos, a reliever who was only used as an emergency starter. The last time the Rays used more than 8 starting pitchers in 1 season was 2008 (9)…The Rays have gained 5 games on the Yankees in 5 days…The Rays are now 29-24, just 3 games behind the Red Sox, and 1 game behind the Yankees for second place in the East and the lead in the Wild Card.

Amazing that in the course of one week 3 different Durham starters will pitch in the show. Good luck tomorrow Chris, make it 3-0 for the rookies in those games.

Cleveland team is one step up from Miami…but good place to start…Archer
the funniest thing is watching Molina chase after passed balls, If I was a base runner I would be on GO just waiting for Molina to turn around…easy steal
My 3rd or 4 yr. saying “play Joyce everyday” ZO at 2nd, the best would be set

      Quick Fact Check:
Indians 29-24 4.98 Runs per game
Marlins 13-41 2.72 Runs per game

      Matt Joyce
      Vs. RHP .268/.358/.504 BA/OBP/SA
      Vs. LHP .192/.274/.306

Cleveland throwing 3 RH pitchers this weekend, hopefully a good weekend for Matty J.

This Kluber tonite is a reverse lefty at least in 2013.

2013 to date RHB have a .863 OPS and LHB have a .673

For his career RHB only have a slight .813 to .800 average.

So at best they May treat him as neutral and go L-R-L-R

      • Dave L says:

Correct. Matt Joyce has never shown he can hit LHP even for small stretches. He is strictly a platoon player. Every time they try him everyday his production drops against everybody.

Plus now with poor defense his stock has dropped in my book. he seems to wake up just when the ball is hit his way lately.

You are being generous O-Tom in looking at his career stats.
        against lefties 2013 he is:

        0.95, 0.95, 0.95 BA/OBP/SLG

        Yikes!

re: the jersey auction… Odorizzi started that game… maybe there’s some sort of collector’s premium for such things…

  4. Dave L says:

It worked out great the Rays rested the “good” starters against the fish, used only the ‘bad’ starters and 2 young guys got their feet wet.

And no permanent damage and 4 straight wins.

Plus we have a double header coming up against the Bosox it comes after a day off but I expect we will get a non traditional starter for that one too.
