Playing A Little Pepper

The Rays recalled RP Alex Colome from triple-A to replace Jake Odorizzi, who was sent back to Durham. Colome will help in the bullpen for the next few days until Odorizzi’s spot is due again in the rotation. At that point, look for Alex Torres or Chris Archer to be called up to start…The Rays now rank 4th in all MLB in runs scored. I’m guessing it is Derek Shelton’s fault that they aren’t leading all of baseball…Kelly Johnson’s 25 RBI in May are second only to Miguel Cabrera (29) and 6 behind Evan Longoria’s club record for RBI in one month.

Single A 50 cent got suspended indefinitely today for conduct detrimental to the team.

Congrats to Alex Colome getting the call up. Maybe he’s the backup second starter to Roberto tonite. Hope he doesn’t need to start warming up too early.

Was he one of those guys they groomed out of the Dominican camp?

Cmon Fausto you are getting impossible to defend, just give us six innings of less than 3 runs. You can do it against these guys. You are making me look bad here. I had faith in you and you are letting me down. Start your real comeback tonite. Keep the ball down.

Sheldon has made Loney a .350 hitter, Johnson a 30 Hr. man, Molina a .250 hitter…but he couldn’t show Upton or Pena or Brignac how to make contact with a baseball…….Now he’s the Man…and its Hickeys Fault…..

Both sides of the Shelton discussion are not arguing fair. The very people who said it isn’t his fault that we aren’t hitting are now trying to give him credit that we are. Can’t have it both ways, no matter which direction you start from.

I maintain that Derek Shelton still sucks at the strategic side of his job. Still seeing plenty of checked swing first pitches and checked swings in 1-0 and 2-0 counts as well. I cannot think of a better barometer for bad or no plate approach than that. You should know your strengths and weaknesses and know the pitcher’s as well. And when you get into favorable counts, or on first pitches, you should, more times than not, be strategizing for a specific pitch. If you get that pitch, to take a rip, if not, you take. No reason to check swing, unless you just completely suck at pitch recognition. I refuse to believe that all of our hitters made it to the bigs without some decent pitch recognition skills.

That said, someone is doing something differently from the previous three seasons. I am not about to complain about Shelton or anyone else right now. We have an “assistant hitting coach” this year for the first time, don’t we ? Perhaps he’s having an influence. If Shelton is focusing on whatever he’s good at (I am going to guess swing mechanics as that is what he talks about a lot), and someone else is focusing on that, then that’s great teamwork.
