Well, it doesn’t look like James Loney is planning on setting down roots in the Bay Area anytime soon. He, and his wife, just purchased a house in Poway, California (near San Diego) for $1.75 million. That seems like a steep price for a player that has made less than $18 million in his career and has no guaranteed contract beyond this season. Another way to look at it is that he just spent nearly all of his 2013 salary ($2.0 million). Hopefully he will continue to have a monster season and some team will throw a lot of money at him next winter…

$1.75 million is not that much. Most people spend more than one year's salary on their home, and if he's only saved a third of his career earnings, he'd still have $4 million in the bank after this purchase to live on. That said, 6,000 square feet is probably a tad excessive.

$1.75 mil for a house in California is chicken scratch

Yeah, I was actually thinking he got a good deal.

I'm with you guys. This sounds like a great deal. Real estate in Cali is out of control for an ordinary house. This looks really nice - no problem reselling this if the need arises.

Maybe he hasn't blown all of that $18 million and had some saved?

Lived in that area for many years. Poway is a really great place to live. Excellent schools. That's a good price for what it appears he got. I hope the Rays resign him!

Napoli is $Million/yr. and strikes out 187 times. No complaints about the offseason trades as a total body of work. But I'd take Loney back in a second,
and double his salary if I were General Manager in Boston.
