We’ve got the highlights you won’t see on SportsCenter…
I think you got this one wrong. I think Zobrist made a very-intelligent decision. He made it to second base sooner because he ran through the bag. If he gets tagged out after he runs through the base, the go-ahead run scores (assuming the runner has crossed the plate, which he would have by the time Zobrist got tagged out). Using the same theory that you don’t slide into first, because it slows you down, Zobrist did not slide into second…
Zobrist has a very-high baseball IQ. I think he knew he needed to win the foot race. He almost did win the race–and the run almost counted.
It would be nice if somebody asked him…
(see my other comment) Nobody is questioning his baseball IQ. Just saying he made a mistake on this one play. As for why, I am not doubting why he did it. But he does not run hard through the bag. He does ease up and slow down.
Incorrect. Would have been out by larger margin if he slid.
No, not common sense. You don’t slide at first base because you can run hard through the bag. Zobrist eased up at second base. He did NOT run hard through the bag. If you watch the replay, you can see that he is even tentative about reaching for the bag with his foot because he is avoiding contact. Besides, if not sliding was faster at second (or third), then why don’t we see it more often?
How awesome would it have been if he ran through second base like it was first base, was called safe, and then continued on to 3rd, only to be tagged out. The run would still score.
Good point. Sliding means the ground is against you. Drew is correct. What the Ph.D. in physics employed by the Rays should teach them is that with 2 outs and a potential scoring base runner, run PAST the bag at all bases. It is part of that extra 2%.
Your last statement, “…if not sliding was faster at second (or third), then why don’t we see it more often?” Because running through the bag is pretty much an automatic out. That is why. I am saying that Zobrist knew it was more important to get there faster (and give himself up as the third out when he overruns the bag), because it was the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th inning.
I think he got there faster. Zobrist makes smart plays. But it would be nice if somebody asked him about the play…
But he didn’t run through the bag. That is my point. If he would have, he would have ended up in left field.
Cork! 1 word, “slideshow”, please…
Your request has been heard and passed along. It is on the to do list.
Thanks! It would just take a lot less to look, and probably a lot less time to post… “NEVER slacking on his pimp’n” Cork! lol
