MLB: Spring Training-Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay RaysThe GBT – The Good, The Bad and The Telling sandwich, where The Bad is nice and lean and the The Telling is ripe.

RAYS 7, Houston 2 (boxscore)

THE GOOD: Staying Healthy. Both Evan Longoria and David Price saw their first action of the Spring. Longoria says his hamstring is fine. And Price lost his mind when he tried to stop a hard come-backer with his wrist. He stayed in the game and afterwards said “it feels good”…Leslie Anderson. Anderson continues to hit well early in camp as he picked up another basehit and drove in a pair of runs. He has 7 RBI early on…Wil Myers. Two more hits for the top prospect as he went 2-3 and is now 3-7 early on.

THE BAD: The Astros. This is a bad team and their first season in the AL West is going to be a long one. Their highest-paid player this season is Bud Norris, who will make $3.0 million. Things are so messed up, Carlos Pena is expected to be their DH. Yes, the guy who can play gold glove defense while hitting .190 is going to DH. That makes sense (no it doesn’t).

THE TELLING: Yesterday’s game was called after 5.5 innings because of rain…Jeff Niemann will start today with Jeremy Hellickson working in relief…Kelly Johnson will get his first start in left field…Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar are going to be a rare combination of middle infielders to start together for three different teams.

  1. Sledge says:

Question. Anderson is here on a minor league deal if I recall correctly. Suppose he keeps his pace up and we like what we see, but there isn’t really a space for him right now on the 25 man roster. Can we automatically put him in Durham and protect him until that first injury to someone on the 40 man occurs? Or will he have to be exposed to loss somehow?

  2. Alex says:

Didn’t Anderson hit the same way in spring training last year too? He’s a 4A player.

It’s not a far cry to believe that he can add enough to his game to make it in The Show… I predict we’ll see him in St Pete by season’s end.

  3. Chris D says:

Not sure what Anderson hit last year in Spring, but in AAA he hit .309/.341/.450 in what was by far his best season.
