A few links to get the week started

  • Marc Topkin has some good news on Evan Longoria’s hamstring. Longoria says “the leg is ready.” Of course, we have been burned before when we got our hopes up. And the Rays are still expected to “hold him out of early spring action.” [TampaBay.com]
  • In that same column, Marc Topkin says “there was some chatter” last week about potentially trading Reid Brignac. He is out of minor league options and is a long-shot to make the team. [TampaBay.com]
  • The Rays need to remove three players from the 40-man roster before deals with Luke Scott, Kyle Farnsworth, and Kelly Johnson can be finalized. Marc Topkin speculates on who might be the odd-men out. [TampaBay.com]
  • Fernando Rodney is still telling people that he is close to a 2-year extension with the Rays. [Alden Gonzalez]
  • Laura McKeeman is leaving the Rays as a sideline reporter for a national gig with Fox. She will be missed. No word yet on a potential replacement. [TampaBay.com]
  • Those Michael Bourn-to-the-Rays rumors keep reappearing. Still hard to imagine the Rays giving up a draft pick for what would likely be a rental. [Jim Bowden]
  • What about Bobby Abreu? [Jon Heyman]
  • ESPN.com says the Rays have the third-best farm system in baseball, noting that the James Shields trade replenished a system that “had some setbacks” in 2012. They do note that the next impact bat after Wil Myers might be in low-A or rookie ball. [ESPN Insider]

Why do we need a replacement for Laura McKeeman? I still don't understand why we needed her in the first place....we have the great Todd Kalas.

Local baseball network requirement...Young, hot looking, female, with some working knowledge of the game feature reporter who wanders around the stadium looking for something to discuss. Ratings booster.
