Now that we know what Kyle Farnsworth, Luke Scott, and Kelly Johnson will be making, the Rays’ payroll is starting to take shape.

Based on players that are currently in the organization, the payroll is projected to be $61.3 million, down 4.5% from last year. Obviously that will change if the Rays sign any free agents or make any trades. Also, this projection is based on players currently on the 40-man roster (players in grey would start the season in the minors). If Jamey Wright makes the opening day roster, this payroll projection would likely go up. However, we don’t yet know what his major league salary would be…

A few notes on the projection…

  • The average salary is $2.4 million.
  • Average salary in MLB in 2012 was $3.2 million and will likely be closer to $3.3 million in 2013. Only four players on the Rays will make more than the league average.
  • Seven players will make at or near the MLB minimum salary ($480,000). The Rays had 12 players making the minimum on last year’s opening day roster. There were ten on the 2011 opening day roster.

The payroll is about where it will be opening day..give or take a minor move.
The big question will be when the Rays rake in 50 million more from TV revenue next year, how much of that will be used to start paying off the exploration fees and ultimately the Tropicana lease deal to get out of dodge?

Probably all of it for more than a few years.... about the cost of 10 buds at a Rays game....had to laugh..at the Super Bowl.. fans were bitching about paying $10 for a beer, Hell I said we pay $9 in little ole St. Pete and we don't even pay the Players ..

Who is most likely RHB 1st Baseman/ DH still available for under$4M?

Thats the last roster move on my wish list.

Once you see Roberto/Fausto locked and loaded at #5 salary wise its for sure he will get every opportunity to land a starters position.

We didnt bring him in at over WD40's salary to be his replacement.

If he DOESNT win a starters job AF will be disappointed.

When anyone questions why Cobb, Niemann, Archer, Odorizi dont make the rotation over Fausto just remember he is an innings eater.

RH/FC is my pickup of the year

Don't know if I would go that far, but Rays seem to be much better in picking up over-the hill pitchers that turn out usefull, than they do picking up anybody that can hit (sorry 1yr Keppinger) must be something wrong in that department...

Looks like a 3 yr window to me for the Rays to make a decision on staying in St pete or leaving for hillsborugh or where ever but not the trop. I believe Evan does not have a no trade. If you look at the big names we have 3 yrs until out of st pete or fire sale.
