David Price was on SportsCenter a few moments ago (wearing the Rays 2010 St. Patty’e Day cap) to promote the MLB2K13 video game, on which he is featured as the coverboy.  Here are a couple of the more telling quotes…

On where he wants to pitch: “I want to be a Ray, 100%.”

On why he loves playing for the Rays: “They treat us like grown men.”

Here’s the video (via ESPN)…

  1. Joe D. says:

    I'm digging DP's green lid!

  2. ed says:

why is it so hard for people to believe that players want to stay here? I believe him , maybe I am nieve, but he does seem sincere. Of course they won't pay him but that's another story for another time. Go rays, and of course now I can say it , go lightning.

    • Cork Gaines says:

I dont think people doubt he wants to stay. But that only becomes a factor down the road if the Rays can offer a contract that is at least competitive. But if the Dodgers or somebody else is willing to give DP $25-30 million per year, he's not going to take $12-15 million per year from the Rays no matter how much he wants to stay.

  3. Don says:

Good time to ask Price what he wants to stay? then its an easy decision, either can afford or can't ...want me to handle it Friedman? or you can wait till he gets other offers, make a move now...Rays..

  4. Daniel Bamber says:

I think he'll be traded after next year and i'm fine with as long as the return is equal to his value, he is starting to get a little expensive for the Rays. Bustler Onley has reported that the Rangers may prefer to keep their prospects for now in order to make stronger offers if and when David Price and Giancarlo Stanton become avaiable. Stanton is a beast, it's hard to judge who the Rangers would prefer to trade for Price or Stanton however it does seem like the Marlins do want to hold onto Stanton, i've read multiple reports saying the Marlins front office has not even had internal discussions about trading Stanton, they want to keep him, so it does seem Price would be the favourite to land with the Rangers. I'd love a deal based around Profar and Olt for Price.

  5. Dave L says:

I dont know why anyone would expect Price to take substantially less to stay here. The Tampa bay area isn't some unique Nirvana. The income taxes are less here and in Texas and some maybe in some other Major League locals but other than that its like any other place with its pluses and minuses. The gap between what the Rays can afford and what someone else will throw at him is vast.

The fact is that there is no contract that would effectively extend him beyond his years of control that would make sense to both sides. If he maintains this trajectory when he hits free agency SOMEONE will overpay, they always do.

And these Rays simply do not overpay nor compete with those who do, thats why they have been successful.

Friedman knows it, Price knows it, his agent certainly knows it so this interview and the Rays indicating they are 'trying' to come to a long term deal is just a kabuki dance for the fans who still believe in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy.

Our only hope to keeping DP frankly, is if he starts getting nagging injuries (ala #3) or his play diminishes substantially which is very unlikely at this point.

Enjoy him while you can and hope as Bamber said to get something good when the time comes so the cycle continues and the cupboards are restocked with younger cheaper players.
