In addition to the September call-ups, the Rays also activated Jeff Niemann from the disabled list. And to make room on the roster, the Rays designated Will Rhymes for assignment (via Marc Topkin). Rhymes will now have to clear waivers in order to remain in the Rays organization.

Players on the 60-day disabled list do not count against the 40-man roster. So even though Niemann was already on the 40-man roster, he was not taking up one of the 40 spots. Hence a player needed to be cut.

Guess we Bulls fans will have to whine about Rhymes. We’re down to nine position players, one with exactly two AAA at bats. But I’m hoping that maybe we’ll use Alex Torres as DH. Maybe better than having him start the game. Do the Rays. Here’s hoping all the Bulls up there in Toronto (they remembered to carry their passports with them) help the Rays win one tonight!

Edits. Delete “Do the Rays”. Not sure what that thought was, but it’s gone…

I guess I spoke too soon. The Bulls are getting a catcher with a grand total of 15 professional at bats, and an infielder is on is way up from Charlotte. 10,000 Bulls fans will be ever so pleased to watch professional baseball tonight.
