Joe realizes the Rays flushed numerous chances to put runs on the board in the 3-2 walkoff loss in Baltimore last night. It was on the damn bats. But Joe still has to question why the move to Kyle Farnsworth to open the ninth when Fernando Rodney was loose in the bullpen.
Who’s the better pitcher? In obviously a supremely critical spot in a critical game?
Joe Maddon managed at times like it was a playoff game, rightfully so, but not all the time. He yanked a viable Alex Cobb in the fifth inning for Jake McGee to get a matchup to close out the fifth. Brilliant. But then he left in Jose Molina to bat with the bases loaded in the sixth?
Maddon talked after the game about needing to “get more offense somewhere.” Well, Molina in that spot is more about prayer and miracles than anything else.
Speaking of prayer, the Rays might need a higher authority if they lose this afternoon and get swept by Baltimore. They Rays’ current plight is a great reminder for all fans who believe there’s such thing as a meaningless April, May, June, July or August game.
